lVIOP OR BRUSH HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,539, dated December 5, 1899.
Application led March 30,1899.
To all whom, t rmt/J' con-cern:
Be it known that I, HENRY O. WooDwoRTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cheboygan, in the county of Cheboygan and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Mop or Brush Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXac-t description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to mop and brush holders; and the object in view is to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient device Whereby interchangeable mop-heads and brushheads may be quickly and securely connected to the operating-handle, so as to prevent accidental .disengagement between said parts.
The detailed objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the ensuing description.
The invention consists in certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and incorporated in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis aperspective view showing the improvements applied to a brush-head. Fig. 2 is a transverse section showing the manner of connecting the handle to the mop. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the slotted clamping-plate which carries the handle-socket. Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the manner in which the clamping-screws are adjusted for removing the socket-piece and its plate.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the draw ings.
Referring to the drawings, l designates the back of an ordinary scrubbing-brush, which for the purpose of carrying out the present invention is provided with a pair of clamps 2 in the form of screw-eyes entering the top surface of the back of the brush at points equidistant from the center of said brush. In connection with said brush I employ what may be termed a clamping-plate 3, which is of oblong form and preferably provided with tapering ends 4f, having open slots 5, through which the shanks of the clamps or Serial No. 711,159. (No model.)
screw-eyes 2 pass. Centrally the plate 3 is provided with a'n obliquely-disposed handlesocket 6, the same being provided at a suitable point with an opening 7 for the passage of a screw or equivalent device S, which enters a handle 9, of wood or other suitable material.
Extending longitudinally and centrally along the upper surface of the plate 3 is a reinforcing-strip lO. This strip may be united throughout its entire length to the plate 3; but its opposite ends are preferably allowed to remain unattached to the plate 3 and are slotted, the slots therein registering with the slots 5 in the plate 3 and also adapted to receive the Shanks of the screw-eyes.
In applying the handle or socket-plate to the brush-head the screw-eyes or clamps 2 are turned so that their heads are disposed longitudinally of the brush-head. This enables the plate 3 to be slipped over the heads of the clamps and brought to bear against the brush-head, whereupon by giving the clamps or screw-eyes each a quarter-turn they engage the plate 3 on opposite sides of the slots 5 and bind the plate and head together. The strip l0 is preferably formed of spring material, and the slotted extremities thereof have a normal tendencyr to spring upward. In this manner they bear with a spring action and frictionally at all times against the heads of the clamps or screw-eyes and prevent any possibility of the plate 3 becoming disengaged from the head of the brush. When it is desired to disconnect the socket-plate from the head of the brush, the screw-eyes or clamps are turned so that their heads are disposed longitudinally of the brush, whereupon the plate 3 may be lifted and disconnected from the brush.
In applying the clamping-plate and handle-socket to a mop I employ a mop-head ll,- consisting of a bar of Wood or other suitable material, which is provided with clamps or screw-eyes, the same as above described in connection with the brush. The material or goods l2 of the mop passes between the headbar ll of the clamping-plate and is thus held securely. The operation of applying the clamping-plate to a mop-head and removing it therefrom is precisely the same as the operation described in connection with the brush-head.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a simple and effective device for quickly interchanging a brush-head and mop, so that the same handle and clamping-plate may be employed in connection with both articles. It is also an easy matter to substitute a new mop-cloth when an old one has become Worn out. Any brush may be used in connection with the handlesocket plate, it being only necessary to apply a pair of screw-eyes or clamps to the back of the brush in a manner which will be readily understood in View of the foregoing description and the accompanying illustrations. If desired, the plate 3 may be made sufficiently thick to give it the requisite stiffness Without the use of the reinforcing-strip l0.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with ahead, and a pair of clamping-screws connected thereto and having oblong heads, of a clamping-plate having slots at its ends to enable it to be slipped over the heads of the clamping-screws when said heads are in a certain position and held against the head by partially turning said screws, said plate being provided With a handle-socket, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a head, and a pair of clamping screws attached thereto, of a clamping-plate having slotted ends designed to t over said screw-eyes, a handle-socket connected to said plate, and a reinforcingstrip extending longitudinally of said plate and having its ends slotted and turned upward to bear with a yielding spring-pressure against the heads of the screw-eyes, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
HENRY C. VOODVORTII.
