COMBINATION UNDERGARMENT.

Be it known that I, HARRY H. CONDIT, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented newand useful Improvements in Combination Undergarments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combination undergarments; and it has forits prime object to provide such a garment or suit wherein the use or employment of buttons is entirely dis pensed with and a close and neat-fittingbuttonless union garment provided.

Combination or union undergarments as now generally made are provided with numerous button-fastenings at the neck-opening, and it is the salient feature of the present invention to entirely obviate the use of such button-fastenings and to employin lieu thereof a simple form of fastening means comprising draw and tying tapes or cords attached to opposite sides of the garment at the neck-opening in such position as to enable the free ends to be readily grasped and tied and wherein a neat and close fit may be secured.

The invention has for its objects other features of construction and arrangement of parts in the general formation and make-up of the garment, all of which will be hereinafter clearly set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein Figure 1 is afront view of the garment with one of the shoulder-flaps partly broken away to show the manner of attaching the tapes. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the upper portion of the garment, showing the shoulder-flaps thrown back.

Referring to the drawings, the referencenumeral 1 designates the body or shirt portion of the garment, having the usual sleeves 2 and drawers or leg portions 3, all of which are preferably made of Jersey knitted fabric. The back 4 of the shirt is provided with two separate shoulder-flaps 5, which are cut or rounded out at their upper edges 6 to provide a neck-openin g, and each flap is provided at its free end or point 7 with a tape or cord opening 8, the said free ends of the flaps being preferably made to abut,so that the tapeopenings will lie close together in order to secure a neat and close fit of the garment, as will hereinafter appear. Each shoulder-flap 5 extends from the neck-opening outward to the armpits and is stitched alongits extreme outer edge 9 to the sleeve portions of the garment, as will be seen. By preference I make the said shoulder-flaps of considerable length, so that they will overlap the upper edge of the front of the garment and extend downward thereover for a considerable distance.

The front portion 10 of the garment extends upward nearly to the shoulder-line 11 and is secured only at its opposite side edges, thereby leaving the garment open at the top throughout its entire width. The upper edge 12 of the said front portion is folded over and stitched to provide a pocket throughout its entire width for the reception of draw tapes or cords 13, said tapes or cords being secured at their upper ends to reinforcing-strips 14, sewed to the garment adjacent to the shoulder-line and preferably near the point of connection between the sleeve and stitched outer edge 9 of the shoulder-flap, these parts being all stitched together at this point. The said upper edge 12 at the front of the garment is provided at a central point with a single opening 15, out through which the free ends of said draw tapes or cords pass, as will be seen from an inspection of the drawings. While I have herein shown and described the drawtapes as being secured near the shoulderline, I wish it to be understood that I may attach them at other points without departing from the spirit of my invention. It is, however, of considerable advantage to secure the ends of the tapes at the particular points herein indicated, since by drawingthem somewhat tight a close and neat fit of the garment is secured, as the pull is directly upon the shoulder-line and sleeves.

,In securing or fastening the garment upon the body of the wearer it is simply necessaryto pass the free ends of the tapes through the openings in the shoulder-flaps-one tape through one fiap and the opposite tape through the other flap-and then draw upon the tapes until a close and comfortable fit is secured, whereupon the tapes are tied as desired.

By the construction her'ein set forth it will be seen that I provide a novel and simple form of combination or union garment wherein but a singlefastening is required and where no buttons whatever are employed, thus enthe tapes or cords in apocket at the upper free edge of the front of the garment I may run the said cords or tapes through said free edge in any other suitable manner Withoutdeparting'from the spirit of my invention.-

While I have herein shown and described I my invention as being applied to combination 7 or union garments, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to this form of gar-' ,g ment specifically, for it will be obvious that the fastening means described may be employed in connection with other forms of wearing-apparel, such as ladies undervests and the like.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. An 'undergarment provided with a pair of shoulder-flaps attached to the back portion of the garment and extending over upon the front thereof to provide a central neckopening, andapair of fastening tapes or cords each secured at one end to opposite sides of the garment adjacent to the sleeves and trav ersing the upper free edge of the front to a central point therein where the ends of said tapes hang free in a position to engage suitable openings in the adjacent free'ends of the 1.

A union undergarment comprising connected body, leg, and arm portions, a pair of shoulder-flaps formed with the back portion of the garment extending over upon the front thereof and having their outer edges secured to said front and to thearm portions, and fastening-tapes each attached at one end to the front of the garment atthe neck and havin g their free ends arranged to enter suitable openings in the adjacent ends of the said shoulder-flaps. i

4. A union undergarment comprising integral body, leg, and arm portions, a pair of shoulder-flaps formed with the back portion of the garment extending over upon the front thereof and secured at their outer edges to the extreme sides of the front, said flaps being cut out at their upper edges to provide a neck-opening, the front of said garment being extended upwardto a point near the shoulder-line and having itsfree edge provided 'witha pocket, and draw-tapes secured to opposite sides of the garment adjacent to the sleeves and located within said pocket, the free ends of said tapes leaving the pocket at a central point in position to enter suitable openings in the free ends of the shoulder-flaps.
