NURSE S CAP.

This invention relates to improvements in head dress or coverings, having for an ob ject to provide a highly practical form of cap for wear by "nurses when engaged in nursing duties, the construction thereof beihg such that it is constituted by a single piece of llat material readily foldable into shape for arrangement upon a wearers head, and which, when soiled, may be returned to its original flat condition and conreniently and eii'ectually laundered as flat work, the body portion of the cap being free of attachments, buttons or the like, which will tend to render laundering difficult.

It is furthermore an object of the invention to provide a nurses cap whose con struction and design is such as to afford an 'efiectual and practical protection for the hair of a wearer and also, to give a headdress an artistic design and aesthetic appeal which, by reason of its materially simplified construction may be quickly and conveniently attached and worn with a greater sense of security and comfort.

Other objects of the invention will be in part obvious and in part pointed out here inafter.

In order that the invention and its mode of operation may be readily understood. by those skilled in the art, I have in the accompanying illustrative drawings and in the de-' tailed following description based thereupon, set out one possible embodiment of the invention.

In these drawings:

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the cap applied to the head of a nurse, and

Figure 2 is a plan view of the same in its flat or unfolded or unflexed position.

Having more particular reference to the drawings, in connection with which like characters of reference will designate corresponding parts throughout, the improved cap may be stated to comprise a flat body portion of suitable material or fabric generally designated by the numeral 1, the material preferably being of a washable material such as-white india linen etc., the for ward or leading edge of the body portion 1 is constituted by several plys or thicknesses of material stitched together as indicated by the numeral 2 whereby to lend greater body to this particular port-ion of the cap for a purpose which will be subsequently described; rows of relatively parallel andlongitudinally disposed tucks being. 7

stitched or otherwise formed throughout the forward portion of the cap as is indicated by the numeral 3.

Extending transversely and rearwardly from the rearward marginal portion of the body 1 and from its opposite extremities are wingliko portionsor lingers i and 5 having button holes 6, 6, 7 and 7 forn'le'd in the free extremities thereof, while from the rearward marginal portion of the body and intermediately of the extensions 4 and 5, another extensionfor finger 8 is formed, the same being disposed approximately coincidental with the wing-like extensions or fingers 4c and 5 as will be noted uponreference vto the Figure 2-, this latter extension 8 having longitudinally spaced butto'n'holes 9 and 10 formed in the outer or free portion thereof. i

At this point, it may be noted that the opposite extremities of the body portion 1 and the opposite marginal port-ions of the wing like extensions 4 and 5 are curved in the manner illustrated in the Figure 2, whereas the opposite marginal portions of the wing like extension 8 are curved upon themselves whereby to lend a somewhat tapered like formation thereto.

Also, to lend some degree of rigidity or to increase the adjacent portion of the body 1, rows of transversely disposed and relatively parallel tucks or similar folds generally indicated by the numeral 11 are formed in the intermediate portion of the body 1 and are extended longitudinally throughout the length of the intermediate wing like extension 8, said tucks being disposed in relatively opposed pairs whereby to lend to the artistic design or appearance of the cap.

In using or attaching my improved nurses cap to the head of a wearer, the body portion 1 is flexed upon itselfinto a substantially sen'ii-circular formation and the transversely disposed wing like extensions i and 5 are extended in directions towards each other whereas the intermediate wing like extension 8 is arranged so that the free portion thereof is disposed in substantially over-lapping relationship to the adjacent or meeting ends ofthe aforesaid extensions 5 and 6. At this time, studs or similar fastening devices are passed through the adjacent or juxtaposed button holes in the extensions l, 5 and 8, one

of the studs being passed through the rela tively registering button holes (i,v l0 and (3 whereas the remaining stud is passed through the relatively registering button holes T, f) and 7. thus interconnecting the Mei-lapping and -tree extremities of said extensions in the manner as is shown in the l igure and providingthereby, a back or rearward portion for the cap. Prior to the folding or flexing ot' the body portion 1 upon itself, or subsequently thereto, as may be elected by a user of the cap, the two ply torward portion oi the body 1 having the longitudinally disposed rows of tucks therein is reversely folded upon itself to that position as is indicated in the Figure 1, thereby providing the cap with the usual band or liar; mrtion 12.

hen the cap becomes soil l1 it may be quickly and conveniently returned to its original fiat condition merely by disengaging the studs designated for convenience herein by the reference character Fl. from the button holes 6, 7, 9, l0, 7 and 6 and at this time, the cap may be laundered conveniently as flat Work, its simplicity of construction .ssnring effectual laundering and finished appearance thereof.

I claim:

A nurse's cap conun'ising a body of flexible material, the forward portion of said body oeing straight and the rear portion thereof being cut into a substantially inverted double U shaped formation the free ends of the extreme extensions of said double U shaped portion adapted to be brought together whereby to carry the sides of said body into close engagement with the sides of the Wearers head, the intermediate extension of said last mentioned portion adapted to lay on the back oil the head and receive the meeting tree ends of the extreme extensions. the inner inargina edges of said inter mediate extension being spaced from the extreme extensions, and a strip of material secured on the straie'ht portion 0t said body and adapted to fold thereover whereby to maintain said forward portion in close engagement with the head.
