l.IO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, SIMON B. Pnminmof the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Safety Attachment for Pocket-Books; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had -to the accompanying drawings7 forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a Apocketbook with my improvement applied to it.
Figure 2, an edge view ofthe same.
Figure 3, a section of the same taken in-the line :e 22,'g. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and simple attachment for pocket-books, whereby the same cannot be ille-- gtinmtely abstracted from the pocket. I i
A represents a metal plate which is firmly riveted or otherwise secured to one side of the pocket-book Pf, said plate having a tube, B, permanently attached, in which a spiral spring, a, is fitted. G is a needle or sharppointed rod, one end otwhich is fitted in a sliding head, b, in the tube B, said head b having a pin, c, projecting from it through a slot, d, made in the tube B and extending nearly its whole length. From the plate A., a short har or rod, e, projects, in which there is a. hole to receive the point of the needle or rod C, the bar e being at one end` of the plate A, and the spring a having a tendency to keep the point of the needle C in the hole of the bar e, as will be clearly understood by referring to lig. 3. In placing the pocket-hook in the pocket the needle or rod C ismade. to pass through -a fold,f, of the pants or coat, as shownin iig. 2, and it will be seen that the pocket-hook cannot be abstracted without drawing hack the needle C, and' that cannot be dono without doubling or folding the hand, which would be sure to lead to detection. Pocket-books are illegtiinately abstracted from the pocket by simply inserting the fingers in a straightened form and grasping the pocketbook between them. The doubling of the lingers or hand would not answer at-- all, and it will be seen that a person cannot draw back the needle C without doubling the fingers or hand.-
This simple device, then, will electually prevent pockets from being picked of pocket-hooks. A lady may also secure her porte-monnaie in -the bosom of her dress or in her pocket without the least danger of losing it. This safety attachment7 while it effectually prevents the pocket-hook from being illegitimately abstracted from the pocket, admits of the former being readily released by the owner when he desires to withdrew -it from his pocket, and also admits of the pocket-book being readily secured in the pocket.
vI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patenti- A safety attachment for pocket-books, composed of a sliding needle C, arranged and applied substantially in the manner as herein Ashown and described.
The above specication of my invention signed by me this 26th day ofSeptember, 1866.
SIMON B. PARKER.
