Application filed March 22, 1518.
To all whom z5 may concern.'
Be it known that I, PETER SCHNURR, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of illinois, have invented new and useful improvements in Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of the invention resides in the provision of a. unique clasp to be applied to shoes and other articles of wearing apparel, so that the latter may be easily fastened or unfastened, the clasp taking the place of other kinds of fasteners.
Another object of the invention seeks the provision of a. clasp which is simple in construction, durable and eifective in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
Still other and further objects are in part 'obvious and in part set forth hereinafter. ,x
To the exact embodiment -in which it is shown and described, the invention is not to be restricted. rlhe right is reserved to make such changes or alterations as the actual reduction to practice may suggest, in so far as such changes or alterations may be comprehended in spirit by the subjoined claim.
ln the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a view in perspective showing one application of the invention,
Fig. 2 is a view partly in section looking down upon the clasp,
F ig. 3 is a front elevational view of the improved clasp.
As shown, the invention is applied to a shoe A having the usual right and left hand aps l and 2. It is obvious, however, that the invention will be equally efficient, if used as a fastener for corsets or other wearing apparel.
rlhe clasp comprises the eye member B and the hook or locking member C to which the eye member connects. The eye member comprises preferably a rectangular shaped plate 3, near one end of which there is formed a quadrangular opening or aperture il. The other end of the plate 3 is bent back on itself to form a U-shaped portion 5. The plate, in the present application of the invention is so attached to the flap l that the legs of the U-shaped member 5 lie against the inner face and outer face respectively of the flap, the transverse portion of the U-shaped member passingthrough a suitable slit formed in the ilap. The eye member B is secured against d1s- Specification of Letters Patent.

placement by rivets 6 which pass transversely through the legs of the U-shaped member and through the ap.
The hook or clasp member C comprises a plate 7 and a bill S which is pivotally connected to the plate. The plate is attached to the fla-p 2 by means of thread or Wire fasteners 9 as shown, these wire fasteners being passed through small holes l0 formed transversely in the plate near either end thereof. At an appropriate point, the plate 7 has upturned from the side edges thereof, the ears ll between the two of which, a pin l2 is supported, this pin being designed to permit the pivotal attachment of the bill S. rlhe bill 8 comprises a metallic plate of approximately the same width as the distance between the ears ll and is provided with ears 13, which pivctally engage the pin l2 and abut the ears ll on the inside. Cne end of the plate or bill 8 is curved in the direction of its length, so that this curved portion has a radius slightly greater than the distance that the pin l2 stands above the plate 7. Thus the toe 14 of this curved portion frictionally engages the plate 7 when the free end of the bill 8 is turned down thereagainst. The curved portion of the plate or bill 8 is of such a length that, when the free end of the bill is brought down against the plate 7, the toe 14 stands on that side of the center of the pin l2 opposite the side on which the free end of the bill stands. Thus in the closure position of the bill, the curved spring end of the plate terminating in the toe let is permitted to expand, thereby yieldingly securing the bill in its closed position.
To augment the closure retaining device of the bill, there is provided a further locking member in the form of a knob l5 which is carried on the outer face of the plate T near one end thereof. This knob cooperates with and engages in a socket 16 mounted on the inner face of the bill 8 near its end.
rThe foregoing description together with the accompanying drawings, makes the operation of the invention apparent, and further description, therefore, is omitted.
rlhe invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
The combination with an eye, of a clasp member consisting of a plate having upturned ears on its opposite longitudinal edges, a pin fixed to and connecting said ears, and a second plate also provided with ears inturned from its opposite longitudinal edges, the said latter ears having pivotal engagement with the pin, the said second plate 0n one side of the ears being bent into substantially semi-circular shape to provide a toe which bears against tl e top face of the first said plate, the said second plate on the other side of the ears being formed to provide a bill which engages the first said plate and is held against the latter by the 10 first said plate against pressure exerted by l5 'the toe upon the first said plate.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
PETER SCHNURR.
