POCKET-FASTEN ER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,906, dated October 15,1889;

Application filed April 29, 1889. Serial No. 309,123. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, BEDFORD WOODSFORD, of 11S Kings Road, Chelsea, London, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pooketl astenersg and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates to improvements in fasteners for securing the months or openings of pockets; and it has'for its object the bet ter protection of articles carried in the said pockets. I attain this object by the device illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the fastener open. Fig. 2 is a View in plan thereof; and Figs. 3 and 4: are views in transverse section on lines o to, showing the fastener open and closed, respectively.

Throughout the views similar parts are marked with like letters of reference.

The fastener consists of a band of springsteel or other suitable material of a suitable size to fit the mouth or opening of the pocket. For convenience in attaching to the pocket I prefer to makethe band in two parts, as illustrated, the ends being adapted to engage with or slide in each other. The back part A carries the engaging hook or snap B, and in the front part A is formed the eye or catch O, with which the hook or snap B engages when the fastener is closed. On the plate A is riveted a light frame A to which is hinged by the pin l) the hook or snap B, on which is fixed or formed a button 13. Into the back of p the button B is formed or fixed a short projection Z), the function of which is to press against the body when the button is pressed in to open the fastener, thus giving the wearer no- -tice that the pocket is being surreptitiously opened. The frame A is adapted to form a guard for the button B, so that accidental pressure may not release the hook or snap and open the fastener. In the plate A is a notch forming the eye or catch 0, adapted to receive the hook or snap B and keep the two parts A and A of the band together. A bowed plate 0 is riveted or otherwise fixed over the catch or eye 0 to inclose it and provide free engaging space for the hook or snap B. A small spring b is provided to keep the hook or snap B forward to engage with the eye or catch O, and the engaging part of the said hook or snap is slightly curved to better enable it to engage with the said eye or catch. It will thus be seen that to open a pocket fitted with this fastener the button B must be pressed inward, when the pocket will fiy open, and to close it it is only necessary to press the band of the pocket containing the fastener against the body.

WVith this fastener I prefer to use a lining to the pocket composed of steel-chain, so that the contents of the pocket cannot be abstracted by cutting the pocket open; but I lay no claim to such a device.

I do not limit myself to any particular method of fixing this fastener in a pocket; but I prefer to insert the parts A and A in the welt or band in a manner well known to tailors.

I wish it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the exact details of construction hereinabove described, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention; but

Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a pocket-fastener, the combination, with the back plateA and the front plate A, of the bowed plate a, secured to the front plate, the frame A secured behind the back plate, and the locking-hook pivoted to said frame and adapted to engage with the front plate, substantially as set forth.

2. In a pocket-fastener, the combination, with the back plate A and the front plate A, of the frame A secured behind the back plate, and the locking-hook pivoted to said frame at its lower end and provided with a rearward projection h at its upper end adapted to press against the body of the wearer and give warning when the pocket is being opened, substantially as set forth.
