JOHN HENRY WELLBORN, OF AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE, MISSISSIPPI,
ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WAYNE C. WELLBORN.
SLATE-CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,056, dated April 11, 18955.
Application filed July 26, 1898. Serial No. 686,899. (No model.)
' county of Oktibbeha and State of Mississippi,
ing back the lateral extension or wing. 3 is a similar view, the lateral extension being have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slate-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification. My invention is an improvement inslatecleaners, and has for an object to provide novel means whereby to form the body of the cleaner and to secure the cleaning and drying pieces; and the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafterdescribed, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a face View of the blank. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the blank rolled to form .the body prior to bendfolded back but not turned at its free end against the body of the cleaner. Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views of the cleaner, Fig. 4 being partly broken away; and Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional View, and Fig. 7 a longitudinal section, of the cleaner.
In forming the body of my slate-cleaner I employ a blank A, of sheet metal, of a sufficient length to form the reservoir desired and having in one edge, about midway between its ends, a notch B and provided in its other edge with the lateral slits O, which separate the tongue D from the body of the blank, which tongue connects the lateral extension E to the body of the blank, such extension E having a longitudinal slit F, in which is secured the drying-piece presently described.
In producing the cleaner from the blank the latter is bent upon itself to bring its opposite edges together, and such edges are secured in any suitable manner, a suitable seaming-ma chine being preferably employed in making the device commercially. The lateral extension is turned back upon the body on a line with the inner ends of the slit 0, and the free end of the extension is suitably secured to the body of the cleaner, the slit F, in which is secured the drying-piece G, being spaced apart from the body of the cleaner, as shown.
Fig.
opposite edges of the blank between which 7 they are passed.
At one end the body is closed by a suitable plate, as shown at I, and a removable stopper J is supplied in its other end.
It will be noticed that the body of the cleaner and the lateral extension which secures the drying-piece are formed from a single plate of metal which can beconveniently struck out and seamed up to complete the article.
In use the body of the cleaner is filled with water and the stopper J inserted, when the water will moisten the cleaning-piece, which may then be used to wash off the slate, which can be dried by the cleaning-piece, as will be understood from the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described slate cleaner composed of the body formed of a single plate of metal having one edge notched and provided at its opposite edge with a lateral extension having a longitudinal slit and integral with the body and having at its juncture therewith a tongue and lateral slits at the sides thereof in lines with the ends of the notch in the opposite edge, said extension being bent back at the inner edge of such tongue and secured at its outer end to said body, the body of the plate being bent to bring its edges together, such edges being united, the cleaner-piece held between the united edges of the body, the drier-piece in the longitudinal slit of the lateral extension, and closures for the ends of the body, substantially as set forth.
JOHN HENRY WELLBORN.
