Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Ian. 6, 1909.
Application filed July 22, 1907. Serial No. 38%,988.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that 1, JAMES M. PULLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ash Grove, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picture-Frame Fastenings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in fastening devices for securin the glass and backs picture frames and or similar purposes.
The object of the invention is to provide a fastening of this character which will be of simple and inexpensive construction and which will be exceedingly efl'ective'and advantageousfor the purpose intended.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of one embodiment of my invention in the form of a tack or nail having a barbed shank; Fig. 2 is a similar view of another form of the invention having a screw threaded shank, and Figs. 3 and 4: are detail sectional views through portions of picture frames showing different uses of the invention.
In the drawing 1 denotes my improved fastening which comprises a shank 2 and a head 3, preferably but not necessarily, formed integral with the shank. ,This head is in the form of a comparatively broad, flat plate, which projects at right angles from the top of the shank and 15 of considerable length, as clearly shown in the drawings. Said .head is constructed of metal that is flexible but non-resilient so that it may be readily bent and will retain its bent form. The shank 2 is of cylindrical form so that it may be rotated or turned in-the object into which it is driven to permit the head to be swung or rotated for a purpose presently explained. In order to retam the shank, which has a tapered or pointed end 4, 1n the .obj ect into which it is driven, I may provide it with upwardly and outwardly projecting wit . barbs or prongs 5 as shown in Fig. 1 or screw threads 6, as shown Fig. 2.
While my improved fastening-may used for, various purposes, it is specially designed for fastening the glass G and back B in the rabbet or groove/ in a picture frame or the like F, as shown in 'Fi s.--3 and 4 ofthe drawings. In using the astening it is either driven or screwed into the frame or other object according to the manner in which the shank is constructed, and when thus inserted it will be seen that its head may be swung or rotated in any direction. By constructing the fastening in this manner so that it can be rotated it will be seen that when it is desired to remove the back B and the glass G, the head may be swung outwardly to clear the edges of said parts, and it will therefore be unnecessary to remove the fastening from the frame. By making the head long and flat and of pliable or flexible and non-resilient material it will be seen,
upon reference to Fig. 4, that should the outer face of the back lie beneath the rear face of the frame, said head may bebent down into the rabbet 7 so as to effectively hold the glass and back.
My improved fastening possesses many advantageous features among which may be mentioned the fact that the backing and glass-may be removed from the frame by simply turning or rotating the fastening through an arc of about 90; that it can be readily applied to the frame by simply maka small hole with an awl and then press- 2' ing the shank inwardly with the fingers;
' that it will hold theglass and backing firmly when they are flush with or project above the top of the rabbet in the frame and also when they lie below the back surface of the frame. V
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
The herein described picture frame fastening comprising a straight pointed shank to be rotatably secured in the back of a picture frame molding, and a head formed integral with theup er or outer endof said shank and projecting laterally from one side of the same, said head being a flat flexible strip of uniform width and capable of being bent upon itself to dispose different portions of it I in different planes, for the purpose specified. In testlmony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature 1n the presence of two wltneses.
JAMES M. PULLEN.
