Description

No. 62|,830. Pafented Mar. 2a, 1899.
J. R. LAVIGUEUR.
COMBINED DUUB STOP AND CATCH.
(Application filed Ju'ne 4, 1898.)
(No Model.)
W pO/Wlagjueu; Invenror JOSEPH ROSARIO LAVIGUEUR, OF MONTREAL, CANADA;
COMBINED DOORSTOP AND CATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,830, dated March 28, 1899.
Application filed June 4, 1898. Serial No. 632,546. (No model.)
To all whom, it 7711a concern.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH RosAnIo LAVI- GUEUR, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing in the city and district of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Door Stop and Catch, (for which Ihave obtained Canadian Patent, No. 59,579, dated April 9, 1898;) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in door stops and catches.
The objects of my invention are to provide a device of this character which will, when the door is opened, stop its further movement and also hold it in its open position.
A further object is to provide a device which will be neat and attractive in appearance, durable in construction, and which can be manufactured at a'moderate cost.
To these ends my invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all of the views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved door stop and catch in position to hold the door open. ,Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
A designates my improved door stop and catch, composed of the plate a, which is adapted to be secured to the wall or washboard at a suitable point, and the pivotallymounted member a. The plate a is provided with two forwardly-extending lugs a each lug being provided with an opening for the passage of a pivot a, the ends of which eX- tend outwardly from the outer faces of the lugs a The member a is formed substantially a shown in the drawings, in which is shown a shell a having its sides extending downward and provided with openings at to receive the ends of the pivot a The front end of the member a is provided with a suitable rubbertip a against which the door is adapted to abut.
A spring a is coiled about the pivot a he ate cost.
tween the lugs a one end of which rests against the front face of the plate a, the other end resting against the under face of'the member a, as shown in Fig. 2. By this'construction the member a is held normallyin a horizontal position, but by reason of its being pivotally mounted capable of being moved downward. The front end of the member a is provided with an upwardly-extending lug a having its front face inclined, as at a the rear face being vertical, as at a.
B designates a catch secured to the door and having its rear end extending downward to form a lug b. The rear face of saidlug is inclined or rounded, as at b, and the front face is vertical, as at b The operation of the device will be apparent. The door is pushed open until the face I) of the catch abuts against the inclined face a of the member (1. Continued pressure on the door causes the member a to be pressed downward until the lug a has passed beyond the face b of the catch, when the spring a will cause the member a to be raised, which engages the lug with the catch. When it is desired to release the door, the member a is pressed downward, releasing the engagement of the lug with the catch, when the door can be closed, the member a resuming its normal position.
The advantages of this construction are many, among which may be included the nonliability of breaking, especially in the case of children playing in its Vicinity.
It is obvious that an exceedingly strong and durably-constructed device is formed, which is neat and attractive in appearance and which can be manufactured at a moder- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is A combined door stop andcatch, comprising a base-plate having forwardly-extending lugs; .a pivot mounted in said lugs, said pivot having its ends extending beyond said lugs; a member, having a top and integral depending side flanges mounted pivotally on said pivot, the mounting being at the ends of said pivot; a spring mounted on said pivot be tween said lugs, said spring having one end contacting with said base-plate and having its opposite end engaging the under side of ICO said top whereby said member will be nordepending lug adapted to ride over and enmally held in a horizontal position, said lugs gage the Vertical face of the lug on said memand spring being in a position beneath and her, substantially as described.
