Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 29, 1914. Serial No. 853,905.
of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Catches and Locks for Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a catch and lock for doors.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of this character by means of which a door may be retained in its closed position and the action of the device will be automatic.
With these and other objects-in view, such as will appear. as the description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as herein set forth and subsequently claimed.
Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is a rear view of my device detached from the door, showing the device in its locked position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts in the position they will assume initial to their locking operation. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the parts in such position .as to maintain the door against accidental opening. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my device attached to a door.
Referring to the drawing wherein like parts are indicated by like characters throughout the several views, my device comprises a casing 1 having a flange 2 thereon by means of which the said casing may be attached to a door. The forward end of this casing is open, as at 3.
Secured to the upper side of the casing 1 within the same is a downwardly extending curved spring 4, having its end terminating V in an upwardly curved portion 5, the said spring being attached to the casing as indicated at 6. A similar spring 7 is secured to the lower side of the casing and within the same, but the resiliency of this spring is greater than that of the spring 4 and the point of attachment, as indicated at 8, is farther from the end of the said spring. Thus it may be readily seen that during the operation of the device the spring 7 will be more readily flexed than the spring 4 as will later appear.
Adapted to be secured to the door is a plunger 9 having a spherical head 10 on the end thereof. This plunger 9 is so attached to the door that when the same is closed it enters the forward opened portion 3 of the casing 1 and as the door comes to its closed position the spherical. head 10 is forced between the end of the curved springs 4 and 7 until the extremities of the said springs will engage the rear portion of the spherical member 10. In this position of the plunger 9 and the springs 4 and 7, the accidental opening of the door by the wind or by other means will be prevented, inasmuch as the springs 4 and 7 are suflicient to stand any such opening action. In order that the door may be absolutely locked in its closed position, I have providedin the casing 1 .a slot 11 and pivotally supported adjacent the slot is a lever 12 having a curved arm 13 and a straight arm 14, the curved arm 13 extending downwardly through the slot 11 and projecting beyond the lower face of the casing. The straight arm 14, however, oscillates about the pivot of the said lever 12 and within the casing 1 so that when the arm 14 is moved to a vertical position it engages the under face of the spring 7 and holds the same upwardly against any action on the door.
From the foregoing description it may be.
seen that I have provided a device Which may be readily attached to a door and clamped so that the door upon being closed will be latched in its closed position against accidental opening. I have further so constructed the device that when it is desirable the latching means may be operated so as to absolutely maintain the door in its latched position.
While I have described and illustrated a particular embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment for it is obvious that numerous changes may be made within the scope of the invention as defined by the claim.
