HEINRICH TIIEODOR REUTER,
MACHINE- PATENT OFFICE.
OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BELTING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 619,908, dated February 21, 1899.
Application filed April 27, 1898. Serial No. 678,949. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRICH THEoDoR REUTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machine- Belting; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in machine-belting; and the object is to provide a compound belt or built-up belt of this character whereby the lap side will have a practically plane face in contradistinction to that class of compound belts in which the lap forlns a longitudinal ridge and is therefore unsuitable for contact with the pulleys.
To this end my invention consists in the peculiar construct-ion and arrangement of the filling, in combination with the inclosing sheath or envelop, whereby the latter will encompass the filling, so as to form a practically plane lapjoint, whereby either side of the belt may be applied to the pulley with the same cohesive result.
The invention further consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several elements of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and partieularly pointed out in the claim.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me 5 but many changes in the details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of my invcntion as set forth in the claim at the end of this specification.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts of the device in the several views.
Figure l is a perspective View of a section of a belt embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section of the parts in position for making the lap-joint.
Fig. 3
is an enlarged transverse section of the complete belt.
l, 2, and 3 denote the longitudinal parallel strips of fabric which comprise the body of. the lling. These strips are practically of the same dimensions, and their contiguous surfaces are cemented or otherwise joined together, so as to form a flexible homogeneous iilling. 4 and 5 represent narrower parallel strips similarly iiXed to the outer face of the filling-strip 3, so as to leave a longitudinal central channel 6 between the inner parallel edges of the strips 4 and 5.
7 denotes the encompassing envelop, the free end 8 of which is trimmed olf to snugly fit the channel 6 between the strips 4 and 5. The opposite flap 9 has' its free edge 10 skived oif to make apractically plane joint with the shoulder or offset l2, caused by pressing the flap end 8 below the surface of the strip 4, so that the entire face of the belt Will present a practically plane surface when this side is applied to the pulley, thereby insuring the same cohesion as the opposite plane side of the belt would if it were applied to the pulley, thus enabling the belt to be reversed, so that when one side is worn the belt may be turned with its remaining face in contact with the pulley.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
A machine-belt comprising a filling, and the parallel strips 4 and 5 fixed to said iilling, so as to form a channel between their inner edges, in combination with an encompassing envelop having its free lapped edges xed within said channel, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HEINRICH THEODOR REUTER.
