H. 1. RICHARDSON.
Ruler.
No. l66,938, PatenredAug-24na75.
UNITEE STATES PATENT OEEro.
HENRY J. RICHARDSON, OF BROOKLYN, E. D., NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN RULERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,938, dated August 24, 1875; application led May 2H, 1875.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I,HENEY JAMES RICH- ARDSON, of Brooklyn, E. D., county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Keepers Rulers, of whichv the following is a speciiication:
This invention consists of a straight iiat st-rip of wood, a, or any other suitable material, similar to an ordinary Hat-ruler, being square, beveled, rounded, or molded on one or both edges, in a similar manner to the Wellknown square, beveled, rounded, or molded edges of ordinary liat rulers, the strip a havlng hlnged or jointed to it at one or both ends several small sections or pieces, b, having the form of a transverse section of the strip a, or any other suitable form, said sections or pieces b being hinged or jointed together and to the strip a by rubber cloth, leather, or any other suitable material, c, the whole forming a fiat ruler having a sectional movable jointed end or ends. The under and upper sides of the ruler are wholly or partially covered or lined with rubber cloth el d', or any other suitable material, securely fastened to them, or only one side may be so covered or lined. The sections or pieces b may be simply pieces cut oi the strip a, or they may be pieces of any other suitable material made in the form of a transverse section of the strip a, or in any other suitable form. c and d may, if preferred, be of one piece, thus making the one simply a continuation of the other.
The invention is fully shown in the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication, in Which- Y Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of the invention with the joints closed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the invention with the joints opened. Fig. 3 is an end view of thestrip a, when made with two beveled edges. Fig. 4 is an end view of the sections or pieces b, When made with two beveled edges. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical section of the invention, having the sections or pieces b made in such a manner that the joints the book near the back, thus preventing the annoyance of the portion of the line near the back of the book being hidden, as is the case with other means of indicating lines ordinarily used. rlhe object of Wholly or partially lining or covering the under or upper side or both sides of the ruler and line-indicator with rubber cloth or other suitable material is to prevent it from slipping upon the book When in use. It is obvious that the ruler and lineindicator can also be used as a ruler in the same manner as any ordinary flat ruler, and when the sections or pieces b are made of the form shown in Fig. 5, the ruler and line-indicator, When properly placed on the book, can be easily used in ruling lines close up to the back of the book.
Having now set forth my invention, what I claim as new isl. A flat ruler having a sectional movable jointed end, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A flat ruler having a sectional movable jointed end, in combination with a covering or lining securely fastened to the ruler, all 4 constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
H. J. RICHARDSON. In presence of- F. T. LoTErAN,
VINCENT D. BOGART.
