  • This invention relates to driving belts or bands of the kind which are made or principally composed of canvas or other textile material or materials, which belts are peculiarly liable to fray at the edges owing to contact with the tines of the fork between runs. It has therefore been proposed to give such belts a complete edging of leather or the like material which is superior in wearing qualities to the material of which the belt is composed; and it has also been proposed to let into the edges of the belt a piece of leather projecting beyond such edges so as to keep the textile part of the belt from contact with the forks. It is found, however, that such expedients detract from the utility of the belt.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER EVELYN RIGHT, residing at Halifax, in the county of York, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Driving Belts or Bands; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same;
This invention relates to driving belts or bands of the kind which are made or principally composed of canvas or other textile material or materials, which belts are peculiarly liable to fray at the edges owing to contact with the tines of the fork between runs. It has therefore been proposed to give such belts a complete edging of leather or the like material which is superior in wearing qualities to the material of which the belt is composed; and it has also been proposed to let into the edges of the belt a piece of leather projecting beyond such edges so as to keep the textile part of the belt from contact with the forks. It is found, however, that such expedients detract from the utility of the belt. To overcome the disadvantages of the previous constructlons I now propose to insert other protecting strip into each edge of the belt, either at the back or on the front or driving surface of the belt, in such manner that the protecting strip forms a portion only of the thickness of the belt, and that the cross sectional shape of the belt is not altered.
According to this invention the belt or band is formed with a recess in either its inner or outer face at each edge thereof, into which recess is secured by riveting, metal stitching or other suitable means a strip of leather or other suitable material which exactly fills the recess, so that the belt or band is of the same thickness and width throughout. The strips are preferably of rectangular cross section.

The reference numeral 1 indicates the canvas or other body of the belt, 2, 2 the strips of leather, and 3 the metal stitches by which the strips are secured to the belt. Wire stabelt is composed entirely of the textile material. The canvas body portion of the belt is formed of plies 5 arranged one above another and secured together in any approved way. The plies which form the back portion of the belt are narrower than those which form the face or driving side of the belt, so that recesses 6 are formed at the edges of the rear face of the belt in which the strips 2 of wear-resisting material are secured.
I claim as my invention driving belt having its 'main or body portion and its driving face formed wholly of textile material, said material being aredges of its rear face, and strips of wearresisting material relatively stronger and harder than the textile material secured in the said recesses and arranged flush with the edges and face of the main portion so that the normal sectional shape of the belt is preserved.
