Description
UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. MAURAN, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
CARPET- LINING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,679, dated. December 9, 1902.
Application filed April 16, 1902- To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. MAURAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carpet-Linings, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention consists in acarpet-lining having a filling formed of parallel longitudinallyarranged strips of crumpled paper provided with parallel transverse strips pasted to the longitudinal strips from edge to edge of the fabric and serving to hold the said longitudinal strips in proper parallel relation with each other.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a piece of carpet-lining embodying my improvement, a portion of the outer paper covering being broken away to show the parallel strips. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section. Fig. 3 represents an enlarged portion of one of the crumpled paper strips. Fig. t represents a transverse section of the same.
In the drawings, A A represent the parallel strips of crumpled paper arranged side by side longitudinally of the fabric, and B B parallel strips, which may be of paper or other approved material, pasted to one side of the parallel crumpled strips A A from edge to edge of the fabric and serving to retain the said strips A A in their close parallel condition; and in order to protect the said confierial No. 103,206. (No model.)
nected strips A A and B B and adapt the lining for long-continued wear I inclose the said connected strips between continuous sheets of paper 0 C and stitch the said sheets together longitudinally at their lapped edges or b and preferably reinforce the lining at the rows of stitches c o by means of the longitudinal strips cl cl. The parallel pasted strips B B will serve to prevent the undesirable displacement of the longitudinal strips A A at the cut ends of the lining when the rows of stitches o o are omitted and also from displacement between the said rows when the stitches are employed. The carpet-lining so produced constitutes an elastic and durable manufacture and may be readily and economically manufactured by machinery.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a carpet-lining, the combination of the longitudinally-directed parallel strips of crumpled paper, and the transversely-pasted parallel strips which serve to bind the longitudinal strips together.
2. In a carpet-lining, the combination of the longitudinally-directed parallel strips of crumpled paper, and the transversely-pasted parallel strips which serve to bind the longitudinal strips together, with the outer paper covering, and longitudinal seams of stitches.
. 'WILLIAM A. MAURAN.
