KNOW yALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS That I, SAMUEL MORIMEIQ-Of Leicester, in the county of'Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts,
have invented a'certa'in new andnseful Improvement in Looms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description oithe same, reference being had to-.the accompanying, drawings, forming a part of this specicatioin'in which- 'Figure 1 represents a front view of so much of a loom. as is necessary to illustratejny invention; and Figure represents a crosssection on line B.
In the-drawings, A A A' A represent the frame pieces of the loom, B the lay, and C C the picker-staffs. The above parts are of common construction, and do not require a detailed description.
My improvement relates to the vmechanism for operating the pickers taffs C C.' Many diierent devicesl have been devised for operating the picker-stai's of looms, to the use of all owhich more or less objections exist, and my-improvement is Adesigned to obviate such objections. The picker-staffs C G are connectedto straps D D, o which pass nround'up'right friction-pulleys EE, and are -connected to pieces a Ya, hinged t the top of the arms F F,vas fullylshown. in the drawings. v Arms F F areof'peculiar construction, their lower ends being made in a curved or circular form, as show-n in iig. 2, and arranged'to turn freelyl upon journals or stands, b b, fastened to thelower sidegpieces of the loomor to projections, che, thereon. Gis a horizontal' shaft, upon which'arms, H H, are fastened, one at eachl end of the shaft, and so arranged that 'their friction-rolls, e e, will strike into the 'curved parts,f, of their respective arms, F, and by their action vupon the curved ends-0lf d of arms Ily F, throw back alternately the upper'end of arms F, as shown in red lines in tig. 2 of the accompanying drawings,
and thus, through the connections a and I) give* th'e necessary motion' to the picker-staffs C C, to throw the shuttle back and forth atl the proper times. By the 'use of arms FF, made in the peculiar manner shown, and arranged in respect to shaft G' and arms H, as described, an easy and eiective motion is imparted tothe pickerstas C C, while the action-'upon' shaft G does not force said shaft alternately endwise, as is the` case in some devices heretofore in use for operating the picker-staffs of looms. `The upper ends vof arms `F F are provided with' a Series of holes, 1 1, whereby straps, D, can be adjusted to give a greater ormless4 throw to the pickers'taifs C C.
Having described my improvement in power looms, 'what I claim therein' as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y Y I.
lThe combination, with the arms or tappets H, mounted at angles with respect to each other upon a shaft,-
G, of the peculiarly constructed curved-levers orarms F,varranged to Operatethe picker-stads substantially' as shown and set forth.
SAMUEL MORTIMER.
