Description

UNITED ,STATES PATENT QEEICE.9
PELEG A. SHERMAN AND FREEMAN BAXTER, OF PAWTUCKET, R. I.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEANS FOR OPERATING THE PICKERSTAFFS 0F LOOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53.892, dated April 10, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, PELEG A. SHERMAN and FREEMAN BAXTER, of Pawtucket, iu the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement on a Loom. We do not propose to drive a shuttle by the means hereinafter described from both sides of the loom, but to operate a hook or whatever instrument or device is used to convey the weft through the warp when it is fed from one side only in such manner that it is necessary to pass the hook or instrument across the warp and return again at each beat of the lay, this being the only class of loom on which we propose to apply our invention; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, as follows:
Ais a lever pivoted on the stud B,and connecting, by the rod C, with the picker-staff D, the motion of which throws the hook E from side to side of the loom. The stud B is secured in or upon a U-shaped brace, F, which is fastened to the lay G and vibrates with the lay upon the studs H H; The upper end of the lever A slides in the guide J, which is fastened to the breast-beam K K, a part of which is taken away to show the position of the guide-lever, 85e., the direction of this slotted guide J being at au angle to the line of motion of the lay. The upper end of the lever A (being protected by passing it through a friction-roll or long thimble) is passed through the slotted guide J and gives the side motion, which is communicated to the picker-staff by the rod C, which gives the motion to the hook or Whatever is used to convey the weft through the Warp.
We claim- The inclined slotted guide J, as set forth, for communicating the desired motion to the hook E or whatever instrument or device is used to convey the weft through the Warp.
2. rEhe guide J and the lever A, connected to the brace F by the stud B, in combination with the rod G and picker-stattl D, as and for the purpose set forth.
PELEG A. SHERMAN, FREEMAN BAXTER.
