Be it known that I, WILLIAM S.' FREEMAN, of West Union, Adams county, Ohi'o havc invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and enact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification. l

My improvements have for their object afsimple and eifective means of opening the shed of the warp, and keeping it open' for a suiicient period to enable the driving home of the woef-thread by the hatten, and an improved arrangement of picker-motion. i

The following parts may be of customary form, and require no specific description, to wit, the frame A, heddles B, treadles @warp-beam and roller D E, cloth-beam and roller F G, and batten I-I.

The driving-shaft IVI is journalled horizontally, transversely of the frame A, at its front end, and is provided at its middle width with a crank, m, of suieient size to enable the weaver to use both hands when desired, and v also, by admitting his body, to enable him to reach any broken thread in the warp, and any other part of the' machine or fabric in front of the heddles.

The driving-shaft M carrieshat its extremities ily-wheels N, connected by pitmen O VO- to the batten H, and one of them is also connected through its pitman-wrist by'a hooped feed-pawl, P, with a ratchet-wheel, Q, upon the shaft R, whosespirally-arranged arms or tappets, S, serve to depress, in appropriate succession, the treadles C. The end of the hook p ofthe pawl P rests in its backward stroke upon a circular boss, g, on the face of the wheel Q, the wheel meanwhile remaining at rest, so as to prolong the wide-open condition ofthe shed during the throw of the shuttle, and thus insure the proper stretch and lay of the woef-thread. A pawl, T, engaging in teeth on the rim or periphery of the wheel Q., holds it at rest during the backward stroke of the feed-pawl. i

By means `of the above-described arrangement of devices, the depression of each respectiver pair of treadl'es results in a tension of the respective ends of the strap V, and operates to vibrate the-pickershaft and throw the shuttle.

The cloth-roller G has a ratehet-wheel, g, engaged by a feed-pawl, W, pivoted to a lever, X. A cord, Y, is connected with the lever X, by being passed one-or more times around a pin in its side, as shown in iig. 1. One end of said cord being carried backward, i`s attached to the batten Hfand the other, passing over a roller, is provided with a weight, Z', which holds the cord taut under all circumstances, adapting the lever to be oscil- ,lated through the cord by the movement of the hatten, and thus at each stroke impart a partial revolution to the cloth-roller. h A

`When it is desired lto weave the cloth less thickly, it is only necessary to draw the cord slightly through the lever, so as to shorten thedistance `between the latter and the hatten, thus lengthening the stroke of the lever, and consequently increasing the movement which it imparts to the cloth-roilcr. The cloth-'then being drawn more rapidly away from the action of the reed upon the woef-thread, the latter is laid up more loosely, and a inoreopeniabric produced. Y i

I claim herein as new, and of my invention Y 1. The driving-shaft M, pawl P, ratehet-wheel'Q, shaft It, with tappets S, and treadles C, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
