LOOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,521, dated November 16, 1880,
I Application filed September 15, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ARTHUR L. BIGsBY and CHARLns L. BresBY, of Trenton, in the county of Grundy and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Looms, of which the following is a specification.
Our improvements relate to positive-motion looms, wherein the shuttle is operated upon and moved continuously during its entire passage across the fabric being woven.
The object of our improvements is, ljrst, to construct a loom having a positive-motion mechanism for the shuttles, so that two or more shuttles or colors may be used, and such shuttles shifted at each opening ofthe shed or at longer intervals, as may suit the pattern being woven; and, second, to furnish a more easy and positive motion to the shuttle, accelerating and diminishing its speed without any sudden startK or stop, and giving time for the shuttle-boxes and harness to change and the reed to beat up the cloth.
To permit the use of two or more shuttles, we place the shuttle-driverand its raceway above the shuttle and on the upper side of the warps, leaving the shuttle to lie naturally without pressure on the lay, which vibrates The shuttle-boxes may thus be placed on a level with the shut tlc-race and the shuttles easily moved in to place under the driver when it is standing still. To propel the driver, we make use of a grooved roller giving motion to a traveler, to which cords from the driver are connected. These features will be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and the invention pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a loom tted with our improvements, the shuttle-driver race being in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the loom on line x of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the shuttlc-box. Fig. is a top view of the shuttledriver. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the shuttle made use of. Fig. 6 is an elevation of the shuttledriver and shuttle in larger size and in position in the shuttle and driver races. Fig. 7 represents, in elevation, the mechanism which we preferably employ for working the shuttle-boxes. v

The harness and harness-motion are omitted from the drawings.
a a are the side frames of the loom, connected together in the usual manner. b is the breastbeam. A suitable let-off motion will be applied in connection with the yarn-beams and a suitable take-up motion in connection with the cloth-beam. The lay is hung on fulcrums d, and is driven by a crank-shaft, c, that connects, by rods j', with the swords of the lay. These parts,beingof`usual character, need not be further described.
The driver-race g is attached on the upper end of thelay by the screws g', that pass through slots in the swords of the lay, so that race g may be adjusted vertically to accommodate the size of the shuttle. The race gis made in form of a tube7 with rectangular sides, having a longitudinal slot, c', in the under side. At each end of the race is a pulley, t', over which the cords run, one of the pulleys t being hung on a swinging arm, t', so thatit may be turned up for insertion of the driver' in the race.
The shuttle-race h is on the lay in front of the reeds, below the driverrace g, and consists simply of a rail fitted at one end with the shuttlc-boxes, as hereinafter described.
The shuttle-driver A is made in two partsan upper part, b', and lower part, c-eonnected by dowel-pins, each consisting of a frame, the upper frame, b', fitted with four wheels or rollers, 7c, that bear against the top of race g at the under side, and the lower frame, c', is litted with two wheels or rollers, l, that travel in contact with the upper side of the warps and give motion to the shuttle. Each roller l comes also in contact at its upper side with two of the rollers 7c, such contact imparting rotation to rollers Zin the same direction as they are rotated by contact with the warps. The rollers l are made of metal or other suitable materia-l, and preferably covered with rubber or other elasticmaterial, and they are also conical, the larger end being in front or outside.
Upon the under side of the driver A there are spring-tongues m, that come in contact with the bottom of the race g at each side of the groove c', so as to insure contact of rollers k with the race, and the rollers l project at the under side through the slot a. The same re- IOO sults may be obtained by using two upper wheels in the driver instead of four, or the upper wheels may be dispensed with entirely, using two wheels, l, with shoulders bearing against the bottom of the race to impart the same rotation but we prefer the combination shown. The shuttles n are fitted at the under side with rollers o o, one near each end, that run upon the race h, the lower shed of warps intervening; and on the upper side of the shuttlc are two rollers, o', which are formed conical, the larger end being toward the reed, and they are placed at a distance apart which permits both driver-wheels l to come between rollers o.
The shuttle-driver A is operated by cords p p, passing from both ends of the driver over pulleys t' and beneath friction-pulleys q q, that are attached beneath race h under the lay, to the pulley o on the traveler s, the ends of cords p being drawn back and fastened to the side frames, a. The traveler s is upon an angular rod, u, that is preferably iixed in the lay, and is driven by a grooved roller, t, that is fitted in journals in the lay and revolved by suitable connections with the driving-shaft. This roller t may extend the full length of the lay, or by multiplying the speed with pulleys the roller t may be shorter. A pivoted stud, s', on the traveler s enters the groove t ot' roller t, and the traveler s is thereby moved with more or less speed, according to the inclination of the groove t to the axis of roller t. The groove t is endless, and may be formed to increase or diminish the speed of the shuttle in any portion of its passage, and is formed at each end of roller t, so that the shuttle-driver will pause at each end of its reciprocation to give opportunity for shifting the shuttle-boxes.
The shuttle-boxes o are itted upon the lay at the ends ofrace h. We have shown a box, e, at one end only, but there may be a box at each end. rlhese boxes fu lie in a groove or mortise formed across the race h, so that their bottom surface is level with the surface of 7L, and are operated by a shaft, fv, carrying pinions meshing with racks ou the under side of the box, so that the boxes t* have motion at right angles to the motion ofthe sh uttle-dri ver A to bring one shuttle out from beneath the driver and another in its place.
7e are aware that looms have been constructed in which the shuttle has been propelled by the shuttle-driver working in a raceway below the shuttle-race, and that in such looms means have been adopted to effect a change of the shuttles by removing or disconnecting the shuttle and shuttle-driver together from the actuating belt or cord, and that one or more shuttles have been made to travel in a circular race operated by a driver acting upon the shuttle from the inside of the warps.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a loom, the combination, with the shuttle-boxes and the actuating mechanism, of a vibrating lay having a shuttle-race below and a shuttle-driver race above the warps, and a two-part shuttle-driver actuated by mechanism substantially as described, whereby may be operated two or more shuttles detachable from the driver at the end of the lay while the loom is in motion, as set forth.
2. In combination with a vibrating lay having the shuttle-race h below and the shuttledriver race g above the warp, the shu ttle-boxes Q2, the shaft e', and mechanism to operate the same, substantially as set forth.
3. The grooved roller t and traveler s, in combination with a vibrating lay, a shuttle-driver, cords connecting said driver and traveler, and suitable guiding-pulleys, as specified.
4t. The shuttle-driver A, formed of the two parts b c', and provided with the wheels or rollers k l, substantially as shown and described.
