WIINESSESQA y INVENTOR @LdQ/fi ATTORNEYJ.
NITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
GEORGE BALDRY, OF DITOHINGHAM, ENGLAND.
DOOR OR GATE FASTEN'ER.
SPECIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 616,877, dated January 3, 1899. Application filed February 24, 1898- Serial No. 671,461. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE BALDRY, a sub-' ject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Ditchingham, in the county of Norfolk, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door or Gate Fasteners, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to that class of door and gate fasteners which embody a sliding bolt operating in keepers; and it has for its object to provide a simple and improved fastening device of this character which will be adapted for the convenient application of sufficient power to force the door or gate up close to its frame.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a top or plan View. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improved fastening device, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation illustrating a modification.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, 1 indicates the door or gate, and 2 the frame, having the keeper 3. The bolt 4 is carried by keepers 5 and 6 on a plate 7, fastened to said door, the former being near the outer end of the plate and the latter near the inner end. The bolt 4 slides within said keepers and is provided with teeth 8 on its outer side and at the inner end thereof. A
' lever 9 for operating the bolt is pivoted between the side plates of the keeper 6 and has the concentric teeth 10, intermeshin g with those of the bolt 4. The rear endof the bolt is also provided with stops 11, consisting of outwardly-extending fingers, between which the lever 9 is arranged to extend when the bolt is shot. The said lever is conveniently provided with grooves 12 to receive the said fingers or stops 11 to prevent the bolt from being forced or moved back without swinging the lever 9.
In Fig. 1 the bolt is shown as retracted, but in Fig. 2 as shot and with the fingers 11 in the grooves 12, it being noted that the bolt 4 can be retracted only after the lever is raised to withdraw the fingers.
In Fig. 3 the bolt is shown applied to the upper end of a door, and in connection therewith is a cord 14, passing around a pulley 15, supported upon the plate 7. The cord is connected with the swinging end of the lever 9, and by manipulating the same the bolt can be readily operated.
The front edge of the outer end of the bolt is beveled or tapered,'as shown at 13, and engages a corresponding opening in the keeper 3, which is secured to the door or gate frame, by which construction and arrangement when the bolt is forced into the keeper 3 by operation of the lever 9 the door -or gate will be forced close into oragainst its frame.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The herein-described fastening device, comprising a plate provided with keepers, a sliding bolt mounted in said keepers and provided adjacent to one end with ratchet-teeth,
' and at said end with projecting fingers, one
of said keepers being also provided with a pivoted lever, the head of which is provided with ratchet-teeth which are adapted to operate in connection with those on the bolt, said lever being also provided in the sides thereof with notches or recesses which are adapted to receive the fingers on the end of the bolt, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein-described fastening device, comprising a plate provided with keepers, a sliding bolt mounted in said keepers and provided adjacent to one end with ratchet-teeth, and at said end with projecting fingers, one of said keepers being also provided with ratchetteeth which are adapted to operate in connection with those on the bolt, said lever being also provided in the sides thereof with notches or recesses which are adapted to receive the fingers on the end ofv the bolt, and said plate being also provided with a pulley, and a cord which is connected with said lever and passed around said pulley, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 2d day of February, 1898. v
' GEORGE BALDRY. Witnesses:
