Description

E. WATROUS.
' DING DooR FAST I I I EDWARD WATROS, OF GEORG ESVILLE, OI-IIO.
SLIDING-DOOR FASTENER.
Application filetl June 23, 1909.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patentea Mar. 22, 1910.
Serial No. 503,939.
To all 'whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, EDWARD VVA'rRoUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Georgesville, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sliding-Door Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door latches, the object being to provide a door latch which is so constructed that the same can be used either on a track door, a swinging door or a gate.
A further object of the invention is to provide a door latch which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction and one in which the parts are so arranged that the same can be easily and quickly placed in position upon a door and frame. i
Another object of the invention is to provide a door latch provided with a spring actuated latch which is adapted to co-act with a catch so that the latch will yield when struck by the head of the catch in order that the catch will be locked after the head has passed over the same.
`With these objects in view, my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the claim, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved door' latch showing the same arranged in position upon a door. Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the catch, and, Fig. il is an elevation of the latch.
In carrying out my improved invention employ a casing A which is provided with a fiange A' having openings through which screws are adapted to pass for securing the same on a door frame. The end of the casing A is cut out as shown at A2 and the top is provided with a slot A3 communicating therewith. Pivotally mounted in the casing is a transverse shaft B provided with a crank arm `B' at one end for Operating the same and secured upon the shaft B within the casing is a pivoted latch O comprising a plate portion provided with a head O' at one end which is normally held in alinement with the opening A' of the casing A by a. coil spring D. Secured to the other end of the latch, the spring has its end bearing against the top of the casing so that when the head is depressed as will be hereinafter fully desoribed, the spring will be compressed so that when released it will force the head up against the top of the casing in alinement with the slot.
In connection with the latch I use a catch E which is provided with openings for securing it to the door and is also off-set as clearly shown at E' having a head F formed at its end provided with a beveled face adapted to co-act with the beveled face of the pivoted latch C when the door is closed, so that the head will ride over the head of the latch which yields so as to allow the head of the catch to pass within the casing and after the same has passed over the head, the spring returns the same so as to hold the catch in the proper position.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a door latch which compris-es a spring actuated latch member adapted to be fixed to the door frame and a fiXed catch adapted to be carried by the door, said latch and catch being provided with heads having beveled faoes which coact with each other when brought into engagement so that the spring actuated catch will be compressed so as to allow the bolt to ride over the same within the casing.
While I have shown and described the latch mounted within a casing constructed as hereinbefore described it is of course understood that various other forms of casing could be used and other ways of mounting the spring actuated latch without departing from the spirit of my invention.
It will be seen that by constructing a door latch as described after the catch has been forced within the casing and locked by the latch, when it is desired to release the same it is only necessary to operate the crank of the shaft so that the head of the latch will be drawn downwardly within the casing below the edge of the opening so that the catch can be readily removed.
What I claim is 2- A door latch comprising a casing having a fiange for securing the same to the door frame, said casing being provided with an opening at one end and a cut away portion in its top adjacent said opening, a shaft eX- tending transversely through said casing ing Said head across' said opening, and a catchvprovided With 21-11 offset having a head adapted to co-aet With the head of the latch. 10
EDVARD VATROUS.
provided With a Crank arm at one end for i'ocking the same, a latch plate Secul'ed upon said shaft by i'ivets, said latch plate being provided With an olfset portion having a l 5 head provided With a rounded face, a coil l lVitnesSes:
