Specification oi! Letters Patent. Patented M31, 23, 1920.
Application filed June 5, 1918. Seriril No. 233,379.
' window sash and will, when adjusted, of"
'fectuelly eliminate the annoying rattle incidental thereto by taking up the looseness, as well as prevent the admission of air through the space between a. loose sash and its casing by automatically correcting the slechness of fit. A
My device inn. be eppliedto any sash in any position t ereof, end innddition to its rattle-preventing and sir-excluding feut1u;-es,,essists to prevent the ready movement of the sash in any attempt to-force an entrance.
These and certuin other advantages which will appear more fully hereinafter, urese' ;cured in the device of the present invention, the construction and operation of which is fully described in the specification which follows, illustrated in. the eccomponying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Throughout the specification and drewings, like reference characters are correspondingly employed, and in the drawings:
Figure l is an elevation of u suliicient portion of a, window sash and frame to illustrade the application and manner of use of my invention, and
l1 igs. 2, 8, i undo are detail views of one of the sosh fasteners, removed.
l have indicated at A, u Window-frame of ordinury construction, and at B a sliding sush.
My sash-fastener is indicated at C, and consists of a substantially oblong revoluble button or catch substantially wedge-formed in cross-section at one end to provide a friction locking surface C zidupted to be wedged between the sash and frame to talio up all lost motion and looseness between the pints end to prevent the sash from rattling.
1 Preferably two fasteners C are employed,
one at each side of the sash and at different heights vertically thereof wliereb to most effectively engage the frame A. heels fus toner has a hole therein through which n bred or screw D: set in the sashextends.
lln order to facilitate turning the fastener on its pivot 1)] into and out of engagement with the frame A, the fastener may have lateral wing portions C extending above the plane of the wedge surface G and pref crnbly terminating short of said surface.
In applying my fasteners, the pivots D are driven or set into the sash at the )roper places to dispose the fasteners O in e eotive relation to the frame A, care being taken to so hung the fasteners as to present their thin edges C toward each other. When properly hung on their pivots, the fasteners are swung upwardly by pressing upon their Wing portions C until their wedge forrned surfaces enter between the sash and frame, being retained in such position by friction. In disengaging the fasteners they are simply swuno in the reverse direction.
Various modifications in the form and construction of my device may obviously be resorted to, within the limits of the appended claims. y
What ltherefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
l. A pivoted sash fastener, consisting of a substantially fiat oblong plate having its longitudinal edges raised above the plane of the plate to provide a pair of oppositely disposed spaced thumb operating portions,
the opposite end of said plate being formed as a wedge surface extending continuously across the. plate beyond the ends of said tliulnb dpersting portions, said wedge surface sloping downwardly from the end of one tb unb portion to the ad acent corner of the plate and sloping upwardly from said corner back toward the thumb portion at the opposite longitudinal edge of the plate.
A pivoted sash fastener, consisting of 21 substantially flat oblong plate having its longitrdinul edges raised above the plane of the plate to provides pair of oppositely disposed spucedthumb operating portions beginning ht points substantially opposite the cehtcr of the plate and terminutin at one end of the plate, the opposite and of said plate being formed as a, wedge surfaceextending c'ontinuouslyoacross the plate beyond the ends of said thumb opera-ting portion, said wedge surface beginning at the end of -one thumb portion and extending downwardly to the adjacent corner of the In testimon whereof I aflix my signature plate, ][and said patei hafiing a hole {31' a in presence 0 two witnesses. pivot etween sai t ium portions an in rear of the center of thepla'te, and a headed FRANK COLBY 5 pivot set through said hole with its head \Vitnesses:
I substantially flush with the upper faces of RALPH E. GARDNER,
said thumb portions. JOHN K. COLBY.
