UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLOTTE LOUISE MAIER, OF RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,293, dated December 6, 1898.
" Application filed May 20, 1898. Serial No. 681,256. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLOTTE LOUISE MAIER, a citizen of the Empire of Germany, residing at Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bibs, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bibs such as are usually used by children at the table to prevent dirtying or soiling their garments; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive and which is provided with means for forming a pocket at the bottom thereof when desired.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which' Figure 1 is a front view of my improved bib before the pocket is formed; Fig. 2, a side view thereof, showing the pocket and showing the bib partially folded centrally and longitudinally; and Fig. 3, a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a bib 5, which may be composed of oil-cloth or any desired material.
The bib 5 is provided in the upper end thereof with a neck-opening 6, at each side of which is a strap 7, by means of which it may be secured to the neck of the child in the usual manner.
The lower end of the bib is wider than the upper end, and the opposite sides of the lower end portion are curved outwardly, as shown at 8, and the edges thereof are provided with facing-strips 9, and formed in or secured in the upper portion of the outwardly-curved sides of the lower end of the bib are eyelets 10, and secured to the outer surface of the lower end of the bib is a wire or rod 11, the length of which is approximately equal to the width of the body portion of the bib, and said wire is provided at each end with an eye or ring 12, and passed through the eyelets 10 and the eyes or rings 12 are draw-cords 13, the ends of which project, as shown at 14. By drawing the ends 14. of the draw-cords 13 together and tying them, as shown at 15 in Figs. 2 and 3, the wire 11 is raised and carries with it the lower end of the body portion of the bib, and a pocket 16 at the lower end of the bib is thus formed which is intended to receive or catch articles dropped by the child while eating.
The draw-cords 13 are held in place by the facing-strips 9, and in practice the lower portion of the bib is preferably doubled or composed of two separate pieces, as shown in Fig. 3, and the lower end thereof is folded backwardly and the wire or rod 11 is placed in the fold thus formed, and said folded end is carried upwardly and secured to the back of the bib in any desired manner, and the opposite sides thereof are folded inwardly to form the facing-strips 9. 7
My improved bib is simple in construction and operation and well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
.I-Iaving fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 7 A bib the lower-end of which is provided with a transverse wire or rod having rings or eyes at its opposite ends, the sides of the bib adjacent to the lower end being extended outwardly and circular in form, and draw-cords passed through the upper portion of said outwardly-extended sides and through said eyes or rings, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I- have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 17th day of May, 1898.
CHARLOTTE LOUISE MAIER.
