CHARLES REYNOLDS, OF JERSEY CITY, NENV JERSEY.
NECK'HE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 709,680, dated September 23, 1902..
Application filed July 8, 1902. Serial No. 114,754. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neckties, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this in vention is to provide an ordinary butterfly tie, which is tied or secured in the manner of an ordinary neckband-tie and which looks like an ordinary neckbandtie when in position, said tie being adapted to be provided with a shield or band in the usual manner.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of one part. of my improved tie; Fig. 2, a similar view of the other part of the tie; Fig. 3, a view of that part shown in Fig. 1 and showing said part folded as in the process of making the complete tie; Fig. 4, a view similar to Fig. 3 of the part shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a View of the two parts of the tie as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 and placed together in the process of making the tie, and Fig. 6 a front View of the tie complete.
In the practice of my invention I provide two separate similar parts or pieces a and Z), as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and these parts or pieces are of the form of the ends of the present style of an ordinary neckband-tie, said ends when tied being adapted to produce what is knownasabutterflytie. Theseparateparts or pieces a and b in the form of construction shown are wider at one end than at the other, said parts being provided, respectively, with the reduced end members a and b and the Wider end portions are preferably cut out at the side, as shown at a and b respectively, and in forming the tie the end a of the part a is folded forwardly, while the end I) of the part b is folded backwardly, these folds being made along the dotted lines a and Z2 respectively, and the part 7) (shown in Fig. 4.) is placed on the part a, (shown in Fig. 3,) this position of the parts being clearly shown in Fig. 5. The end member a of the part a is then folded forwardly and downwardly over the part b, and the end member 19 of the part I) is turned backwardly, and the parts and Z) are then brought together at the back and secured there by tying or stitching, and this produces the complete tie, as shown in Fig. 6.
The turning of the part a over the part b, as shown in Fig. 5, and the part b backwardly and securin g said parts at the back produces exactly the appearance of'an ordinary neckband-tie of the style now in usewhen the ends are tied together to form what is known as a butterfly tie, and an ordinary shield 0r neckband may be secured to the back of the tie portion 0 in the usual manner.
The style or shape of the parts a and I) may be varied, as will be readily understood, as the said style or shape forms no part of this invention, and the edges thereof may be straight throughout, if desired, andthe body portions thereof may be made narrower, if desired, all that is necessary being to provide two similar parts, fold them in the middle, as herein described, and place said parts together, as shown in Fig. 5, the folded end piece being at the front on one part or memher and at the bottom on the other part or member,so that said end pieces may be folded around and secured at the back so as to produce the central tie portion 0.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A butterfly tie consisting of two separate similar parts a and b, said parts being provided with end members a and b one of which is folded forwardlyand the otherbackwardly, said parts being then placed together so that the end pieces will be adjacent and across each other, the front end piece being then folded backwardly and the back end piece forwardly and downwardly and backwardly, and said end piece being secured at the back, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 5th day of July, 1902.
