BICYCLE-SKIRT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,429, dated December 1, 1896. Application filed February 4, 1896. Serial No. 577,984. (No model.)

Be it known that I, JULI S N. LEWINSON,

of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bicycle-Skirts, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip- .also be used for equestrian and like exercises.

The object of the invention is to so construct the rear portion of the skirt that the said rear portion from the waistband to a predetermined point between the top and bottom of the skirt may be opened in an expeditious and convenient manner for the convenience of the wearer, and, furthermore, whereby when the said opening is closed an apron will cover the said skirt-openin g in such a manner that said opening cannot be detected, and the skirt .at the back upper portion will have the appearance of an ordinary walking-skirt. p

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a view of the skirt, taken from the front, the skirt being illustrated as in position upon the wearer. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the upper portion of the skirt viewed from the front, the parts of the skirt being in substantially the same position as when in use. Fig. 3 is a view of the skirt upon a form, viewed from the back; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the skirt, taken from the rear, illustrating the rear upper portion of the skirt opened.

In carrying out the invention the skirt Ais shown of the type known as the bloomer skirt. The skirt has the front breadth and side breadths, the latter being plaited at their rear edges and extended inward at their lower portions, forming the inner walls of the trousers, and are united at their upper edges, forming the crotch. The said skirt is provided at its back central portion with an opening 10, extending from the waistband a predetermined distance in direction of the bottom of the skirt; This opening 10 may be practically closedfthrough the medium of flaps 11 and 12, ,which are secured to opposite side edges .Of theopenin g and extend substantially from top to bottom of the same.

One of the said flaps is provided with buttons of the-aforesaid flaps 11 and 12, and the aforesaid waistband is adapted to be connected at its ends by hooks and eyes or other like devices. The lower portion of the opening 10 is covered by an apron which is a continuation of the back breadth of the material of the garment, and this apron may be plain or may be fancifully formed, as desired, and is designated in the drawings as 16, but in every instance the apron is so shaped as to carry out the design of the lower rear portion of the skirt or the back breadth thereof. The apron 16 is of sufficient length and of sufficient width to extend upward to the waistband 15 and entirely cover the flaps 11 and 12, used for closing the rear opening 10, and the said apron is provided with buttons 16 or other fastening devices, adapted for engagement with keepers 16 of any approved description, located upon the. upper rear portion of the skirt, outside of the forward side margins of the said flaps 1'1 and 12.

The apron 16 is attachedto a band or belt section 17, and the aforesaid band is preferably made to terminate at its ends in tabs 18, each tab having a buttonhole 19 made therein, and at each side of the front central portion of the main band 15 preferably two openings 20 are made, as is particularly shown in Fig. 4; and after the flaps are secured together and the apron is carried upward over the flaps the tabs of the apron-band are threaded through the openings 20 in the main waistband and are secured thereto by means of buttons 21 or similar devices, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

The side edges of the apron are plaited, forming extensions of the plaits at the rear of the side portions, and this apron is connected with and is adapted to maintain the crotch in position when in use and to lower said crotch when desired.

It is obvious that the rear portion of a skirt constructed in this manner may be opened quickly and conveniently, and that the garment may be easily doffed or donned, and that when the opening is closed through the medium of the flaps and the apron the presence of the said opening cannot'be detected.

It will be observed that the flaps 11 and 12, which cover the opening 10, are substantially rectangular in shape, that is, when the flaps are closed there is a vertical line of division between them and the lower edges of the flaps form a substantially horizontal line. The
