Be it known that I, ROBERT L. ZILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin,in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Bibs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has relation to bibs for children, the object being to provide a bib with a pocket at its lower end to catch any food or drink that might be dropped or spilled, thereby preventing soiling of the clothes and the carpet or floor.

The primary object of the invention is to insure a distention of the pocket, a feature essential to the attainment of all the advantages of the invention.

The invention consists of a bib having a pocket, in combination with a spring-frame detachably fitted to the pocket for distention thereof and composed of a bow and expanding-arms, the latter having sliding connection to admit of the distending-frame being readily placed in position and removed and packed in a small space.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for efiecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and-drawings hereto attached.

WVhile the essential and characteristic features of the invention are necessarily susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bib, showing the application of the invention, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a front View of the distending spring-frame. Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 4. is a front view of a modification.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The bib 1 may be of any size and outline and is provided at its lower end with a transverse pocket 2 for catching any food or drink part of Letters Patent Application filed April 3, 1901.

that may drop, the bib and pocket being formed of waterproof material of any kind, this being preferred, although not essential, as any textile or material may be employed.

The front portion of the pocket is full, so as to stand off from the bib to insure catching any article of food or drink which may drop accidentally or otherwise. The pocket is approximately of crescentform, and small pockets 3 are provided at the cusps or corners to receive the end portions of the distending spring-frame, so as to hold it in position against accidental displacement. The cornerpockets 3 are formed by stitching the outer flap or front of the pocket to the back of the bib, as indicated most clearly in Fig. 1 and as will be readily comprehended. The distending-frame is composed of a bow 4 and spring members 5, the inner end portions of said members passing by each other and adapted to have a limited play, so as to admit of the end portions of the frame being pressed inward either to reduce the size of the frame or to admit of its being placed within the pocket or removed therefrom. The spring members lie in a different plane from the plane of the how 4, thereby serving to hold the pocket expanded to insure its catching any article which the child or user of the bib may let fall. The frame is preferably constructed of a length of spring-Wire, the end portions of which are bent to form the members 5. Short turns are formed between the proximal ends of the bow and members 5, and these turns are in the plane of the bow. As shown in Figsl 2 and 3, the terminal portions of the members 5 cross and terminate in eyes 6, which receive the bow e and upon which the extremities of the members 5 are adapted to run or slide when the ends of the frame are pressed inward and move outward.

In the form shown in Fig. 4 the spring members 5 have their inner end portions overlapped and terminating in eyes 6, through which the respective members 5 pass. In this form of frame the members 5 unitedly form a bow which extends at an angle to the plane of the bow 4 and which is adapted to engage with the front portion of the pocket, a short distance below the upper edge thereof. The bow 4c stretches the pocket transversely of the bib, whereas the spring members 5 hold the pocket open to insure its catching anything that may be dropped. The pocket and frame are of corresponding size, and when it is required to place the frame in position one end is slipped into a corner-pocket 3 and the frame is compressed to admit of its opposite end being engaged with the other corner-pocket. Normally the frame is under tension, the bow 4 compressed, and the spring members 5 being confined in such a manner as to create a tension thereon, and this tension upon the elements of the frame results in holding the pocket expanded both longitudinally and laterally, whereby the said pocket is distended when the frame is located therein.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In combination with a bib'provided with a pocket, a spring-frame removably fitted within the pocket and adapted to hold it dis tended, substantially as set forth.

2. In combination with abib provided with a pocket,aspring-frame for holding the pocket distended and composed of a bow and spring members, the latter being located in a different plane from the bow and having their inner end portions passing by each other and guided in their movements, substantially as set forth.

3. In combination with a bib provided with a pocket, and having endor corner pockets, a spring-frame removably fitted Within the pocket and adapted to hold it distended, said frame adapted to have its end portions fitted into the corner or end pockets of the main pocket, substantially as set forth.

4. In combination with a bib provided with r a pocket having end or corner pockets, a spring-frame comprising a bow and spring members, the latter being located in a difierent plane from the bow and having shortturned connection therewith, the short turns being in the plane of the bow and adapted to fit in the corner-pockets at the ends of the ROBERT L.
