UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM II. WRIGHT, OF BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE E. INGRAHAM COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SASH FOR CLOCK-DIALS. Q
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 614,523, dated November 22, 1898.
Application filed July 25, 1298. eel-a1 No. 686,781. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. WRIGHT,
of Bristol, in the county of Hartford and State sashes for clock-dials of the class of sashes commonly known to the trade as French sashes, the object being to produce of the type mentioned a sash which shall not only be very much cheaper than the French sash of commerce, but which shall be more convenient in use and present fully as attractive and elegant an appearance.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a sash for clock-dials having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention I form by casting or otherwise a heavy annular sashband A, which will ordinarily be produced with more or less elaborate ornamentation in relief. I secure this band by its rear face to the forward edge of an annular sheet-metal sash-flange B, which extends rearward at a right angle to the vertical plane of the band, which, together with the said flange, forms the sash proper. I may secure the flange and ornamental band together in any desired manner. As shown, the rear face of the band is I formed with a very narrow shoulder a, which inner face of the band and held in place by means of a light ring D, secured within the forward edge of the flange.
The dial E, which may be of any approved construction, is itself mounted in the inner edge of the beveled mat F, struck up from light sheet metal and preferably made highly ornamental. The said mat F is secured to the said sash-flange B by means of a hinge G of any suitable construction. I should also mention that the mat is formed with a slightlybeveled shoulder F, which is made small enough in exterior diameter to permit the sash-flange B to readily pass over it. As this is not a friction fit like that relied upon in a French sash to hold the sash in its closed po sition with respect to the mat, I provide fastening means which are here shown to con sist of a retaining-point II, formed in the shoulder F of the mat, and a retaining-socket H, formed in the sash-flange B; but these fas tening devices may be replaced by any other suitable construction.
By forming the sash-band and sash-flange of the sash independently of each other I avoid the expense of turning a cast sash-flange down in a lathe, and am also enabled to produce in soft metal a sash-band more ornate than it is practical to make in hard metal with an integral sash-flange. I also avoid the necessary turning of the exterior shoulder of the mat required to secure a friction fit be tween it and the sash-flange. My improved sash is therefore not only very much cheaper to produce than the ordinary French sash, but it may be made even more elegant in appearance and is vastly more convenient in use.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- In a sash for clock-dials, the combination with an independently-formed ornamental sash-band,of a sheet-metal sash-fiange formed independently of the said sash-band, secured by its forward edge to the rear face thereof and extending rearwardly therefrom at a right angle to the plane thereof, the said band and flange together forming the sash, a dial, a sheet-metal mat in which the dial is mounted and which is formed with an external shoulder of smaller diameter than the said sashspecification in the presence of two subscribflange, a hinge for securing the sash t0 the ing witnesses. said dial-mat, and means applied to the said mat and the said dial-flange for securing the 5 sash in its closed position with respect to the Witnesses:
mat, substantially as set forth QHAS. M. SEYMOUR,- In testimony whereof I have signed this \VM. M. BEAZLEY.
WILLIAM II. IVRIGIIT.
