Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1919.
Application filed May 25, 1918. Serial No. 236,448.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY B. HURNI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Watches; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure l a view in central transverse section of a watch constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 a broken detached sectional view on an enlarged scale showing one edge of the center-band of the watch-case.
Fig. 3 a broken edge view on the same scale showing the watch-movement.
Fig. & a broken view of the back of the watch with the back-cap removed.
Fig. 5 a broken sectional view showing one of the screws employed for securing the movement in the case.
My invention relates to an improvement in watches, the object being to reduce the cost of their construction by reducing the thickness of the stock used in the production of the center-band, and to improve the character of the seating of the watch-movement therein.
With these ends in View, my invention consists in a watch characterized [by having the front edge of its center-band formed with a seating-bevel and by having its front movement-plate formed with a corresponding bevel.
11 carrying out my invention, as herein shown, I form a seating-bevel 2 in the front edge of the center-band 3 which in other respects may be of any approved construction, the said bevel 2 being of greater width than the thickness of the stock used in the production of the center-band. I also form the outer edge of the front movement-plate with a corresponding bevel 5 which seats upon the bevel 2 as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The bevel 5 is seated upon the bevel 2 by means of such screws as are ordinarily employed in securing watch -movements in watch-cases. One of these screws 6 is shown in Fig. 4:, this screw being mounted in the movement in position to engage with the rear edge 7 of the centerband. These fastening screws, wherever located, will operate to draw the movement from front to rear so as to seat the bevel 5 upon the bevel 2 not only firmly, but in such a manner as to compensate for any variations in the construction of the case and front movementplate. By employing the construction described, I am enabled to use much thinner stock in the production of the center-band 3 than it is possible to use in watches as ordinarily constructed, in which the front movement-plate is formed with an overhanging edge or flange fitting intoa square rabbet 1n the edge of the center-band, which construction does not provide compensation for inequalities. In my construction the front and rear edges of the center-band 3 are formed with shoulders 8 and 9 upon which the bezel l0 and back-cap 11 of the case are snapped in the.usual manner. It will be observed that the shoulder8 is arelatively deep shoulder, and is located in the horizontal plane of the seating-bevel 2, the said bevel and shoulder forming the opposite faces of the flange-like front edge of the center-band, whereby the thickness of the watch is reduced.
I claim In a watch, the combination with a sheetmetal center-band having a flange-like front edge the inner face of which forms a beveled seat of greater width than the thiclmess of the stock from which the band is formed; of a front movement-plate having its front edge formed with a bevel, a back movementplate, and a screw passing through the back movement-plate into the front movementplate and having its head overlying the inner edge of the center-band for seating the bevel of the front movement-plate upon the said beveled seat of the band.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribmg witnesses.
