SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 787,637, dated April 18, 1905. Application filed April 16, 1904. Serial No. 203,455.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W ILSON E. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in atches; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the figures of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

My invention relates to an improvement in watches, the object being to save time, labor, and expense in fitting a watch-movement in its case, to secure it accurately and solidly in place, and to eliminate the danger of binding or springing it or the case so as to interfere with its performance.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a watch having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown I employ a movement-support in the form of a ring 2, embracing the rear movement-plate 3, bearing at its forward edge against the inner face of the edge of the front movement-plate 4 and made wide enough to project at its rear edge beyond the rear or outer face of the said rear movement-plate 3, so as to form, in eflect, a supporting-footQ, as shown by Fig. 6. As shown, the said ring is broken away at the top; but it may be made continuous, if desired. The case-bod y or casecenter comprises a hollow ring 7, an inside cap 8, made integral with the back of the said l j l l rear movement-plate 3,
ring, and a circular bezel-receiving flange 9, made integral with the front of the said ring and turned inwardly into the plane thereof and forming an opening large enough to permit the watch-movement to be-passed through it into the-body of the ring. The bezel 10 is snapped over the flange 9 and carries the watch-crystal 11. A case-back or outside cap 8, formed with an inwardly-turned flange in the usual manner, is snapped over the shoulder 8" at the junction of the inside cap 5 with the ring 7, as shown in Fig. 6. It will be understood, of course, that the movement is made sufiiciently small in diameter to be introduced into the ring 7 through the said flange 9 at the front thereof.
To secure the movement in place within the ring 7, I employ anchor-screws 12, passing from rear to front through holes 13 in the inside cap 8, through registering holes 14 in the and entering threaded 7o screw-holes 15, formed in the front movement or pillar plate 4, the said anchor-screws being located within the movement support 2. \Vhen the said screws 12 are turned home, theywill draw the entire movement rearward, so as to seat the edge of its front movementplate 4 upon the forward edge of the said movement-support 2 and in turn draw the movement-support rearward, so as to seat its rear edge or foot 2 throughout the length thereof upon the inner face of the inside cap 8 of the ring 7. The said foot 2 holds the rear movement-plate 4 away from the inside cap 8 sufiiciently to provide an ample clearance-space 16 for the bridge 17, which carries 5 the regulator-lever 18. The watch-movement is also provided with the usual dial-plate 19, to which the dial 20 is applied.

It is apparent that in carrying out my invention some changes from the construction herein shown and described may be made. I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself thereto, but hold myself at liberty to make such departures therefrom as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a watch, the combination with a casecenter having an inside cap, of awatch-move ment made sufficiently small to be set into the said case-center from the front thereof,a movement-support resting upon the said cap, one or more anchor-screws passing from rear to front through the said inside cap and screwing into the front plate of the said movement and coacting with the said cap to draw the movement rearward and seat its front plate firmly upon the said support and in turn to draw the said support rearward and seat the same firmly upon the said cap; and a casebacl; or outside cap fitted over the case-center to cover the said inside cap.
2. In a watch, the combination with a casecenter having an integral inside cap,of a watchmovement made sufficiently small to be set into 1 the said case-center from the front thereof, a
movement-support resting upon the said cap and forming a seat for the said movement, and one or more screws passing from rear to front through the said cap, entering the said movement and coacting-with the said cap to draw the said movement rearward and seat the same firmly upon the said movementsupport and in turn to draw the said movement-support rearward and seat the same firmly upon the said cap.
3. In a watch, the combination with a casecenter having an integral inside cap, of a watchmovement made sufficiently small to be set into the said case-center from the front thereof, a ring forming a support for the said watchmovement and encircling and projecting rearward beyond the rear plate thereof, and anchor-screws passing from rear to front through the said cap into the front plate of the said movement and coacting with the said cap to draw the movement rearward so as to seat the same upon the said ring, and in turn to draw the said movement-support rearward and seat the projecting rear edge thereof on the inner face of the said cap.

In a watch, the combination with acasecenter having an integral inside cap,of a watchmovement made su fiicientl y small to be set into the said case-center from the front thereof, a ring encircling and projecting rearward beyond the rear plate of the said watch-movement, and at its forward edge extending under and forming a bearing for the front plate of the said movement, and anchor-screws passing from front to rear through the said inside cap and through the said rear plate and inside of the said ring and screwing into the said front plate and coacting with the said cap to draw the said movement rearward so as to seat its front plate upon the forward edge of the said ring, and in turn to draw the said movement-support rearward and seat its projecting rear edge upon the inner face of the said cap.
