UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES K. GILES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WATCH-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,990, dated July 5, 1887.
Application filed October 22 1886. Serial No. 216,914. (Morlcll To all whom, it nuty concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES K. GILES, a citizen of the United .States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Watch-Cases, which is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a watch-case embodying my invention; Fig. 2, asectional view of the same, taken on the line x or of Fig. 1;
and Fig. 3, a detail elevation of the internal ring detached. Figs. 2 and 3 are on an enlarged scale with respect to Fig. 1. 3
My invention relates to watch-cases, and has for its object to produce a dust-proof case which shall be simple and strong in construction; and to these ends my invention consists in certain novel features, which I will now proceed to describe, and will then particularly point out in the claims.
In the drawings, A represents the case-center, which is in the form of a ring-centerinternally screw-threaded, as shown at a. The center is preferably provided at its upper inner edge with an inwardly-proj ecting flange, a, and is likewise adapted to receive the front plate in case the watch isahunter-case, or the bezel and crystal in case it is an open-face watch.
. case-center A when the ringB is screwed into position. This flange also forms the means for the attachment of the back cap, C, which snaps over the same, the flange being beveled, as shown, to form a snap-seat to receive the said back cap. "When in position, the backcap rests against the under side of the casecenter, A, and extends to the outer edge of the same, thus forming a neat and smooth joint between the back cap and case-center.
It is obvious, of course, that instead of employing a snap-seat to secure the back cap to the ring, a threaded joint may be employed at this point. I
- The lower edge of the ring B, to the rear of the flange b, is rabbeted,as shown at D to form a seat for a shield or cap, D, which rests within the space formed by the said rabbet between the ring and the back cap when the parts are in position, as clearly shown in'Fig. 2 of the drawings. This shield or cap D is constructed of some highly magnetic metal-such as iron or the like-suitab1y plated, if desired, with the metal of which the other portions of the case are composed or with which they are plated. The object of this shield or cap is to form an anti-magnetic shield, to protect the movement from the injurious disturbances of magnets or dynamo-machines. The general principle of this portion of my invention is fully set forth in Letters Patent No. 289,642, granted to me December 4, 1883, and therefore needs no extended description here. It is obvious, of course, that this shield may be'omitted, if desired, since the structural elements of the case are not affected by its presence or absence.
I In assembling the case the ring B may be first screwed into position in the case-center, and the back cap and shield, D, in case this latter be employed, may then be applied in an obvious manner. It will be seen, however, that these latter parts of the case may be applied to the ring before thelatter is screwed into position in the center, if desired. WVhen properly assembled, the whole forms a dustproof case, with suitable protection against magnetic disturbance, if desired, and adapted to receive and protect the watch-movement. It is obvious that various modifications in the details of construction and arrangement of the parts may be made with out departing from the principle of my invention, and I therefore do not wish to be understood as limiting myself strictly to the precise details hereinbefore described, and shown in the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with the internallythreaded case-center A, having inwardly-pro jecting flange a, of the externally-threaded ring B, adapted to fit within the same and having flange b resting against the case-center and bevel, as described, to form a snap-seat, and
the back cap C, secured to the ring by means of said snap-seat and resting against the casecenter, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination, with the internallythreaded case-center A, of the externallythreaded ring B, fitting within the same, the back cap O, secured to the said ring, and the anti-magnetic shield D, secured between the :0 back cap and ring, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. The combination, with the intern all ythreaded ease-center A, of the externallythreaded ring B, fitting within the same and having flange 1) and rabbet b", the back cap, 0,
secured to the ring by means of the flange,and-
the anti-1nagnetic shield D, secured in the rabbct I)" by means of the back cap, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
