Description
No. 608,927. Patented Aug. 9, I898.
J. H. TABLEB.
PONCHU HOLDER.
(Application filed July 12, 1898.)
(No Model.)
Ilrrnn STATES- JOHN HOWARD TABLER, or LANHAMS, MARYLAND.
PONCHO- HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,927, dated August 9, 1898. Application filed July 12, 1898. Serial 110,685,796. (N model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HOWARD TABLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lanhams, in the countyof Prince Georges and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Poncho-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to accoutrement for soldiers, and has special reference to aharness for the packing and carrying of the usual roll, composed principally of the blanket, poncho, &c.
The main objects of my invention are to produce a very cheap and easily-manufactured arrangement of straps and fastenings for the same, whereby the roll carried by the soldier may be quickly secured and securely held in position and the whole supported across the shoulder of the soldier and held in position and capable of being quickly released when occasion may require without the necessity of untying strings, which often knot, or undoing buckles.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a general view of my invention, the same being shown in position upon a soldier. Fig. 2 is a detail of the poncho with the holder attached. Fig. 3 is a perspective view in detail of my invention.
Similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In carrying out my invention I employ two short straps 1 1, the same having buckles at one end, as indicated at 2 2, and their opposite or free ends provided with the usual holes for the accommodation of the tongues of the aforesaid buckles.
Between the ends of each strap 1 and on its exterior I apply a leather keeper 3, the ends of the keeper being secured in position upon the strap by means of rivets 4t 4:, although other means for securing the keepers in position may be employed, if preferred. Held in place by each of said keepers is a metal ring 5,
the same being located between the rivets 4 4 in a loose manner, whereby it is capable of swinging from side to side.
Located between the two metal straps 1 1 is an intermediate connecting-strap 6, one end of which may be fastened to one of the rings in any suitable manner, but preferably,
as shown, by bending the same about the,
the latter, the said straps being adj ustedl to the size of the roll by means of the buckles with which they are provided. I may or may not employ a central strap 11, adjusting the same about the center of the roll 10 for the purpose of securing the roll in its closelypacked position at that point.
The roll is now ready to be applied to the shoulder of the soldier. This is usually done by slinging the same over the left shoulder, the front and rear ends of the roll hanging at the back and front. It now merely remains to pass the short intermediary strap about the right side under the arm'of the soldier and snap the hook into the adjacent ring. In this manner the poncho-roll is held securely in position, and yet may be immediately removed when necessary, the whole being ac- .complished without feeling for buckles or buckle-holes or tying and untying knots in strings.
It will be seen that the whole device is very simple and is wholly devoid of any complicated arrangement whereby its use might be misunderstood, but, to the contrary, its appli cation and use are obvious at a glance.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is+- 1. A sling or carrier for a soldiers poncho and the like, the same consisting of apair of adjustable straps adapted to be applied to the poncho-rollnear the ends of the latter, a ring applied to one of said straps, an intermediary strap connected to the opposite of said straps and a snap-hook at the free end of the intermediary strap adapted to snap termediary strap connected to one of said into the aforesaid ring. rings and removably attached to the other.
