FOB-STRAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 20, 1911.
Patented Oct. 1, 1912.
Serial No. 639,640.
{ State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fob- Straps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fob straps of the class which are employed to carry a watch or other device in the pocket and a pendant or other ornament at the lower end of the portion of the strap which hangs 'suspended from the pocket.
My improvements have particular relation to devices'of the class just set forth in which the strap which carries the watch and suspends the pendant is of pliable material, such as leather.
The object of my invention i t provid.
a simple and improved fob strap which will enable the more ready and convenient attachment and detachment of the watch or devices which it carries, which can be readily and economically manufactured, and which will possess advantages in point of security and convenience and facility in. use, durability, effectiveness, and general efhclency. I, In the draw1ngs-F1gure 11s a face vlew of a fob device having my improvements.
Fig. 2 is a rear View thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal sectional view thereof, illustrating the operative, action in dotted lines. Fig. 4: is a detail cross-section on the lines m--w, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a face view illustrating a modified construction.
sectional view of said modified construction.
Corresponding parts in all the figures are denoted by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the fobdevice, which is constituted by a strap of pliable material, preferably leather. The body comprises a top loop, as at 2, for engaging a watch or other article to be worn within the pocketof the user, and a bottom loop, as at 3, for engaging a pendant or ornament or emblem to be suspended from the fob strap outside the pocket. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 to4, inclusive, the body 1 is constituted by three strips, one of which, 4, forms the top loop 2, and the others of which, 5
Fig.- 6 is a rear view of the construction shown, in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a detail longitudinal and 6 respectively, form the suspending portion and the bottom loop 3. The pre ferre construction has the .top strip 4 turned upon itself to form the loop 2, the back strip 5 turned upon itself at the bottom to form the loop 3 and the front strip 6 extending from the lower portion of the top loop 2 to the bottom loop 3. The top ends of the strips 5 and 6 and the rear bottom end of the strip 4: are permanently secured together, and the strip 4-.l1aS a free front-end portion, as at 7, and the lower end of the back strip 5 has a free end portion at the front,as at 8, to form the bottom loop. 3, over which the lower free end of the front strip 6 projects, as at 9.
. Inrthe usual constructions heretofore employed, the loops of fob straps oft-he class to which my invention relates have been secured by buckles embodying the ordinary not only provides a more ready and con venient and safe fastening but also constitutes the securing means by which the ends of the strips constituting the body 1 are A permanently secured together. In the pre ferred construction, as herein shown in Figs, 1 to 4 inclusive, the securing means for the ends of the strips constituting the body 1 and the fastening means for the top loop 2 comprise a stud device, as at 10, having a back plate or disk. 11, and a front plate or disk, 12, connected with a stud, 14. which passes through the rear bottom end of the strip 4 and the top ends of the strips 5 and 6 and projects beyond the face of the front strip 6, said ends being permanently secured together and clamped between said disks, and the free front end 7 of the strip 4 carries a socket, 15, adapted to engage the projectingportion of said stud 1 A corresponding construction is provided for the bottom loop 3, which comprises a stud, 16', near the lower end of the back strip 5 and projecting from the front face thereof, said stud being connected with a back plate or disk, 17, and a front plate or disk, 18, between which the strip 5 is secured or clamped, and the lower end of the front,
foration, 20, to receive the stud 16 beneath the socket 19.
In the operation of the stud and socket constructions as just described, the top loop 2 and bottom loop 3 are readily operable to enable the detachment and connection of the watch or other device carried in the pocket and the pendant or ornament carried at the lower end of the suspended body 1, and said loops are securely and effectively maintained in closed status.
A safety device, 21, is preferably employed, and is located at the rear side of the body 1 in direct connection with the stud device 10 for the top loop 2. In the preferred construction, the safety device comprises a plate, 22, having at its lower end an opening, 23, receiving the stud 14:, said perforated end of the plate 22 being secured and clamped between the back disk 11 of the stud device 10 and the body 1. Said safety device may be in its operative parts of any suitable or adapted construction, but preferably comprises an approximately U-shaped top portion, 24, adapted to receive the edge of the pocket in which the watch is worn, and carrying a cam finger, 25, adapted to compress the fabric at the inner face of the pocket-edge to securely lock the fob strap in connection therewith.
The improved associate construction, as above described, thus comprises composite means for securing the edges of the strips of the body 1 in permanent connection, for fastening the top loop 2, and for securing the fob strap in connection with the pocket of the user.
In the modified construction shown in Figs. 5 to 7 inclusive, the body 1 is constituted by a single strip or strap turned upon itself to form the top loop 2 and the bottom loop 3, one end of said single body-strap being secured by the stud device 10, as at 26, and the other end constituting the free front portion 7 of. the top loop 2, carrying the socket 15. In this single strap construction, the pendant or ornament, 27, which is suspended from the fob strap, is permanently retained in the closed bottom loop 3, a securing means being preferably provided in the loop immediately above the pendant, which preferably consists of an eyelet, as at 28, passing through the front and rear portions of the strap atthe bottom portion of the loop 3 immediately above the portion of the pendant which engages said loop. The
front portion of the body strap may be suitably ornamented in any desired manner,
preferably by perforations, as shown at 29,
which perforations can be only provided in the front suspended portion of the body 1,
as herein shown, or they may extend continuously throughout the body strap if desired.
A supplementary safety device, 30, is
' preferably employed, in connection with the bottom loop construction 3 of the type shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, in which the loop is adapted to open for the attachment and detachment of the pendant device 27, for the purpose of retaining said pendant device in secure connection with the loop. In the preferred construction for this purpose, the safety device 30 is constituted by an approximately U-shaped plate, 31, one arm of which, 32, is provided at its top end with an opening, 33, receiving the stud 16, said arm being secured in connection with the pliable body 1 by being clamped beneath the front disk 18 of the stud device 16 and the front face of the back strip 5. The other arm or wing, 34, is shorter than said main arm 32, to form an open mouth, as at 35, to the U- shaped socket, which latter is seated at the bottom of the loop 3 and is adapted to receive the top portion, 36, of the pendant 27 by which the latter is suspended in the loop. For additional safety, the arm 34 is preferably provided with a spring finger struck up from its body and projecting inwardly, as at 37 which will act as a lock for the pendant.
If desired, the safety device just described may also be employed and correspondingly arranged with relation to the top loop 2, for the purpose of locking the watch or other device which is carried in connection with said top loop.
The operation and advantages of my invention and improvements will be readily understood. The improved fob strap, by reason of its relative construction and arrangement as herein described, provides means for the safe and secure retention of the watch and pendant devices and also enables the more ready and convenient manipulation of the fastened loops in the operation of attaching or detaching the watch and pendant devices. The improved construction also provides a simple means in which the stud fasteningsfor the loops are combined with and carry supplementary safety devices in conjunction with the fob strap.
I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the detail construction and arrangement of parts as herein shown and described, as it is manifest that variations and modifications therein may be resorted to, in the adaptation of my invention to Varying conditions of use, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variations and modifications as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims.
