Description

(No Model.)
. Qwmm I.
I O. SAGER.
HAT HANGER.
Patented Dec. 21, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO SAGER, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
. HAT-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 595,736, dated December 21, 1897. Application filed December 17, 1896- Serial No- 616,016. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OTTO SAGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rochester, county of Monroe, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Hangers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming if desired. The device is adaptable for permanent attachment inside the hat, and it is capable of carrying an advertisement.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a ladys hat, showing my improved hanger, attached thereto; and Fig. '2 is a perspective, view of the hanger, drawn to an exaggerated scale.
In the practice of myinvention the hanger or clamp A is composed, preferably, of asingle piece of resilient wire, the two ends of which are flattened, as at a, for clamping and contacting with any article to which it is desirable to hang the hat. The lower arm a of the clamp extends rearwardly to a point 1. It is then brought back to a point 2 and coiled into a spiral spring 3, and then extended rearwardly to a point 4 and coiled into a loop 5, thence forwardly back to the point a, whereby the arm a of the clamp is formed.
Metallic collars B are preferably attached to the rear of the spring 3 upon each arm of the clamp to strengthen the device, and a shield O, of fabric or other pliable material,
may connect the two rearward extensions of the arms. Upon this shield an advertising announcement 0 maybe placcd.
Connected to the loop 5 is a flexible string D, which is secured at its other end to a plate E. This said plate has a sheath e, projected from the center thereof, adapted for receiving and retaining the hanger A when the same is not in use, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. 7
The plate E is provided with apertures e through the ends thereof for receiving threads, whereby the plate may be securely stitched to the inside of a hat.
In the operation of the device the hanger orclamp is placed within the sheath 6, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, during the time that the hat is worn. When the hat is removed, the hanger is removed from engagement with the sheath and clamped over any object adapted to hold the hat-for instance, the back of a theater-seat-whereby a lady can conveniently remove her hat in the theater and hang the same up without danger of injury to the hat.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A device for hanging hats and similar articles, comprising the wire clamp A, flattened at both ends, collars B upon the arms of the clamp, a coiled spring located between the arms, in combination with a plate E having .a sheath e for clamp A, said plate having a flexible connection to the clamp,substantia1ly as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 11th day of De cember, 1896.
