Description
J. P. CAVANAGH. TRGUSERS LEG HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 2, 1911. Patented Feb. 13, 1912.
JAMES E. CAVANAGH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TROUSERS-LEG- HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led August 2, 1911.
Patented Feb. 13, 1912.
Serial No. 641,893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES F. CAVANAGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers-Leg Holders, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is an improved device for use by bow-legged men to keep the trousers legs from bending in on the inner sides and to hence conceal or modify the deformity, the invent-ion consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved device of this character which may be readily and expeditiously attached to the leg, which does not incommode the user and which is extremely cheap and simple.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a plan of a trousers leg holding device constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same attached to a garter, the cross sectional shape of the trousers leg in which the device is used being indicatedV in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is partly an elevation of the same and partly a section on the line a-'aof Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the leg holding bar; Fig. 4f is a detail perspective view of one of the clip plates employed for connecting the leg holding bar to the band formed by the garter; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the plane indicated by the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
In accordance with my invention I provide a bar l which is designed to be worn on t-he leg of the user, on the inner side thereof, and to bear against the inner side of the trousers leg so as to keep the trousers leg from bowing in and to thereby conceal the deformity of the leg or at least greatly I modify and reduce the effect of the appearance of the same. This bar is preferably elastic so that it will conform to the shape of the trousers leg cross sectionally, and, in practice, I make this bar of rubber so that while it is suiiiciently strong to hold the trousers leg in shape it will flex to some eX- tent and conform to the cross sectional shape of the trousers leg and its use will not be noticed. This supporting or holding bar is carried by a suitable band or other device which engages the leg of the user. This band 2 is here shown as a. garter of usual form.
Vithin the scope of my invention any suitable means may be employed to connect the holding bar to the attaching device or band. I have preferably employed and here show a pair of clip plates 3 for this purpose. Each of these clip plates is provided with a pair of openings 4 through which the garter or band is passed, as shown, and each plate is also provided near its outer end with an opening 5, the outer end of the plate being doubled and bent to form a securing lip 6. The bar 1 isprovided near its ends with inturned reversely curved attaching members 7 which are preferably formed integral with the bar, by slitting the ends of the bar on parallel lines 8 as shown in detail in Fig. 3, so that not only are the attaching devices 7 formed at the ends of the bar but the latter, is also provided with flexible fingers or arms 9, which bear against the inner side of the trousers leg and flex readily so as to conform to the cross sectional shape of the trousers leg and prevent the use of the bar from being noticed. The inturned ends of the attaching devices 7 are passed between the clip plates 3 and the band 2, out through the openings 5 of the said clip plates and are doubled and bent and engaged by the lip 6 at the outer ends of the clip plates and hence the bar is connected to the clip plates and is spaced from the band or attaching device 2 by the attaching arms 7. These arms, being of rubber, are flexible and form yieldable or cushioning connections between the bars and the attaching device or band and readily yield to the motions of the user and co-act with the bar 1 in preventing the inner side of the trousers leg from bending in. Hence the bar, being spaced from the inner side of the leg engaging band, adjusts itself by theaction of the elastic attaching arms 7 and keeps theJ inner side of the trousers leg straight, thereby concealing the misshapenness of the leg of the user.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
l. A trousers leg holding device of the class described embodying an elastic bar, a leg engaging device, and means for connecting the said bar and the leg engaging device, said connecting means being spaced from the ends of the bar, spacing the bar from the leg engaging device and holding the bar in a substantially horizontal position.
2. A trousers leg holding device of the class described embodying an elastic bar provided With elastic lingers at its ends, a leg engaging device and means connecting the said bar and the leg engaging device, said connecting means being spaced from the ends of the bar, spacing the bar from the leg engaging device and holding the bar in a substantially horizontal position.
.3. A trousers leg holding device of the class described embodying an elastic bar, a leg engaging device and elastic means connecting the said bar and the leg engaging device, said elastic connecting means being spaced from the ends of the bar, spacing the bar from the leg engaging device and holding the bar in a substantially horizontal position.
4L. A device of the class described comprising a ba-nd to engage the leg of the user, clip plates connected to and adjustable on the band, an elastic bar t0 bear against the inner side of a trousers leg, and elastic attaching devices between the clip plates and the bar to space the latter from the clip plates and yieldingly support said bar.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aHiX my signature in the presence of t-Wo Witnesses. JAMES F. GAVANAGH. Witnesses:
GEO. MUCKENSTURM, ALBERT H. EADNER.
