UNITED STATES .PATENT CEFICE.
CHARLES ALBERT CHENEY, OF MADISON, WISCONSIN.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 594,193, dated November 23, 1897. Application filed June l, 1896.' Serial N0. 593,904. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, CHARLES ALBERT CHE- NEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and amusing Toy, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to toys in which a musical gong and performing figures are mounted on and attached to a wagon, and the movementof saidl wagon either forward or back will cause the gong to sound and the performing iigures to' execute their movements; and the objects of my invention are to provide a toy wagon complete within itself with the gong and performing figures so constructed and arrangedthat they can be added or detached at will, and the wholeconstituting a cheap and amusing toy, compact and convenient for transportation. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a left side elevation of my toy complete. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. Sisa plan of Wagon with performing iigures removed. Figs. 4 and 5 show the arrangement of the gong l in connection with the shaft c, &c.
The two sides d d', cut away on the lower o front corners and extending downward a little back of the center and terminating in bifurcated lugs b ZJ', form the bearings for the rear axle c, and in connection with bottom board d and front and rear end boards c f and the front axle g form the framework ofmy toy. The front axle gis rigidly attached between the side boards d d at their extreme front ends, and upon the said axle the two front Wheels h h revolve, being held on the axle by the caps 't'. The rear axle c is a round shaft, with a pin j passing through it a little to the left of the center, the pin j projecting far enough each side of the shaft to engage the end of the hammer-handle o, on which the hammer 7c is fastened, so that with each revolution of the axle c the gong Z receives two blows from the hammer. The two large or rear Wheels m m are rigidly fastened to the axle c, which is prevented from coming out of the bifurcated lugs h h by the button n.
On the inside of the side pieces a ct are glued blocks a2 d3, forming sockets a4 a5, and into said sockets are placed the lower ends of the standards 52193, which standards are slotted at their upper ends to form bearings for the revolving horizontal bar o.
The performing figures p are pivoted at the shoulderst and hips u, and the end of the .arms are rigidly fastened to the bar o, so the body of the figure swings between the arms as the bar is revolved by the rubber band or belt q, which passes around the bar and down through the hole r in the bottom board d and around the axle c.
The hammer-handle o is secured to the bottom board d by staple s, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
To take down for shipment, stretch rubber band until it will pass over the top of the standard b2, when the gures and standards can be removed, and by turning the button n one-fourth around the rear axle and wheels are released.
Having thus described and explained my invention, I desire to secure by Letters Patent the following:
The combination with the toy wagon having a removable rear axle secured in position by a button, and two removable standards slotted at the top ends to receive the bearings of a horizontal bar carrying two performing figures, of the rubber band for the purpose of transmitting motion from the axle to the horizontal bar, and by the removal of said rubber band the releasing of the said parts making the toy compact and convenient for shipment, as described and set forth.
CHARLES ALBERT CHENEY.
