Description

cited tant SAMUEL E. CLEVELAND, or BUFFALO, YORK.
Leners Patent N0.85,72'7, maa .Tama/ry 12, 1869.
Tor-Hoop.
`The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. CLEVELAND, of the city of Buialo, in the county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy-Hoops; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure I is a side elevation, with one-half the image removed.
Figure II is a vertical section in line :c x.
Figure III is a horizontal section inline y y.
Like letters of reference designate like parts in all the figures.' l Y My invention relatesV to that class of toy-hoops in which au image, arranged or' suspended within the hoop, has motion imparted to it, as the hoop revolves, by means of suitable mechanism connecting the latter therewith.
p D is a handle for operating the hoop, the inner end .of -which is slotted so that the fork, D D', thereof will extend on each `side of the hoop toward the centre, to
theends of which-are attached the stationary partsV E E, or body of the'image, which is made in duplicate and forms the bearings for the axis of th'e hoop which rotates between.
The parts D D' may, if preferred, be extended to the centre, so as to form the bearings themselves.
The axis may be a. stationary one, connecting the bearings E E with the hoop rotating thereon, or gudgeons may extend from the hub and revolve in, the said bearings. Y
The legs, F F, of the image (which, in the drawings, .represents a boy or man) are pivoted, at d, to the body or bearing-portions E on the inner side of each, form- 'ngva joint corresponding to theA articulation of the thigh. v
A concentric slot, e, formed Vin each leg," below the -pivot or joint, through which the axisg passes, permits the required oscillation of the leg, as hereafter described, while it also operates as a stop to limit the degree of oscillation. The legs may, however, be suspended from the axis itself, and oscillate from that poiut.
To each side of the hub is attached, in any suitable manner, a number of cams, h l1., which may be economically formed from a single plate, as shown.
A pin, t', projects inwardly from the upper portions of the legs with which the cams are engaged as the hoop revolves, which imparts a forward movement to the legs, their gravity being sufcient to cause them to oscillate backward after they become disengaged from the cams, thus imitating the natural movement vin walking.
ment of the latter is communicated to and produces' a corresponding swinging or oscillating motion of the arm. l
The operating of my improved hoop, which is designed as a toy for children, is as follows:
The hoop is rolled upon the ground in front of the child by the handle I), the cams h h, on each side of the hub, being so arranged as 'to alternately and succ'essively engage with the pin projecting from the adjacent leg, and thereby produce that alternate action of the legs imitative of the natural movement.
It is evident that any other character of image may be substituted for-theA one represented, and the parts thereof be actuated in the same manner.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Operating the legsF F, or equivalent part-s, of any image by means of cams h h, and projections i, -substantially in the manner and for the purposespecified.
