TOY WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,613, dated December 6, 1892.
Application filed June 20, 1892. Serial No. 437,281. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ALBERT G. DOUTHIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhart, in the county of Anderson and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Toy Wagon, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in toy'wagons; and it consists of the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof, as will be more fully hereinafter described and clai'md.
The object of this invention is to provide a device of the character set forth, which is adapted to afford considerable amusement by virtue of a novel arrangement of revolving, swinging, and reciprocating gures, which are operated through the medium of groundwheels.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved toy wagon. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 3is a side elevation with a portion of the wheels removed and parts broken away. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view on the line :1; x, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line y y of Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a platform having rear openings 2 Von opposite sides of a central opening 3, a slot 4, extending partially across the same, a larger slot 5 in advance of the slot'4, and a front opening 6. The said platform is supplied with suitable under strips and` supporting parts, which will be employed, where found necessary, for the connection of the several parts, and also has standards 7, with lower slotted ends 8 to removably receive front and rear rotatable axles 9 and 10, having ground wheels 11 fixed thereto. On the rear axle 10, at the opposite sides thereof, are mounted eccentrics 11', in connection with friction-wheels l2. Surrounding the said eccentrics are yokes 13, carried by vertically-disposed rods 14, passing through tubes 15, having heads 16, supporting couples or figures, and lower frictionwheels 17, having a rubber covering on each and engaging with the outer sides of the aforesaid wheels 12. The said tubes 15, together with the rods 14, extend upward through the openings 2 in the rear portion of the platform 1, and the rods 14 have heads 18 at the upper ends thereof engaging the heads 16 of the tubes 15 to prevent upward withdrawal of said tubes. The said rods 14 are also provided with lower shoulders 19, adjacent to the yokes 13, to prevent downward movement of the said tubes, and by this means the frictionwheels 17 are held in proper A,contact with the wheels 12. The central portion of the rear axle is straddled by the lower portions of the opposing sides of a hanger 20, which has a cross-web 21, in which the lower end of a solid centrally-located vertical shaft 22 is stepped, and has a rubber-bound frictionwheel 23 on the said lower end thereof. Loosely surrounding the said shaft 22 is a tubular shaft 24, having a rubber-bound frictional wheel 25 secured to the lower end thereof, and on the said tubular shaft 24 is loosely mounted lanother tubular shaft 26, also carrying at thelower end thereof a rubber-bound frictional wheel 27. The friction-wheels 23, 25, and 27 are horizontally disposed, and the ends of the shafts 22, 24,and 26 carrying said wheels project above the platform 1 at varying elevations. On opposite sides of the hanger 20, and fixed to the axle 10, are frictional wheels 28 and 29, which vary in diameter and have the inner opposing faces thereof bearing against the several frictional wheels carried by the shafts 22, 24, and 26 to operate the same as the wagon is propelled. The wheel 28 is provided with a single engagingrim, which contacts with the frictional wheel 25, and the wheel 29 is supplied with inner and outer rims, which contact, respectively, with the frictional wheels 23 and 27, and by this means a reverse movement or rotation is imparted to the several shafts. On the upper end of the shaft 22 is secured a figure 30, and removably fitted to the shafts 24 and 26 are crossarms 31 and 32, which are arranged at right angles to each other and have figures 33 on the ends thereof in different positions, and which may be arranged in any desirable manner and be of any nature or form best adapted for the purpose. By the mechanism heretofore described the said arms 31 and 32 are revolved in reverse directions and provide a very amusing and interesting portion of the toy.
A rock-shaft 34 is centrally mounted under the platform 1 and has the rear end thereof bearing in the front portion of the hanger 20, and the opposite end of the same rotatably mounted in a depending hanger 35. This rock-shaft 34 is made in duplicate, and consists of an outer tubular portion 3b', in which is fitted a solid portion 37, and the opposite ends of the said solid portion 37 has bearing in the hangers 2O and 35. Each of the wheels 28 and 29 is provided with a pin projecting from the periphery thereof and indicated by the numerals 38 and 39. On the rear portion of the solid portion 37 of the rock-shaft is fixed an arm 40, which is adapted to be engaged by the pin 38 of the wheel 28. and on the rear part of the tubular portion 36 of the rock-shaft is an arm 4l, which is adapted to be struck by the pin 39 on the wheel 29. An arm 42 is secured to the tubular portion 36 of the rock-shaft, and projects upward through the slot 4 of the platform l, and has a head or hammer 43 on the upper end thereof. This arm 42 is adapted to be oscillated transversely by the pin 39 of the wheel 29 striking the arm 41, and in the line of said oscillation of the said arm, and adapted to be struck by the latter is a drum 44, represented as being supported by a gure 45, and through the medium of the mechanism set forth the said drum will be struck at regular intervals, as will be readily seen. On the front end of the said portion 36 of the rock-shaft is secured another arm 4G,and projecting away therefrom at an oblique angle and upward through the slot 5 in the platform 1 and adjacent to the said arm 46 is a similar arm 47, which is secured to the front part of the solid portion 37 of the said rock-shaft and also extends upward through the said slot 5. On the upper ends of the said arms are fixed figures 48, representing goats with their head portions opposingly situated, and the movement of the arm 46 is somewhat limited by a pin 49, projecting across the slot 5. Secured to each of the arms 46 and 47 are yielding cords or springs 50, which control the position of said arms, as will be readily seen. This feature of the toy is exceptionally amusing and works simultaneously with the other parts heretofore set forth. i
On one side of the front axle 9 is secured an eccentric 51,which is embraced by a ring or yoke 52, having a pitman 53 rising therefrom and projecting upward through the front opening 6 in the platform 1. Adacent to the said opening 6 is a vertically-situated post or standard 54, on the top portion of which is pivotally connected the central portion of a transversely-extending arm 55, which is oscillated by the pitman 53, the latter being connected thereto by a link 56. This arm 55 operates after the manner of a teetering board or arm and has figures 57 mounted in connection with the opposite ends thereof. It will be seen that this portion of the toy operates simultaneously with the other parts set forth, and the whole device providesasource of considerable amusement and pastime when properly propelled. It willbe understood that a suitable handle or tongue will be provided, and that the device entire will be constructed of any suitable material best adapted for the purpose, and that which will lighten the structure and at the same time reduce the expense of manufacture and sale. The nature of the figures supported by the several parts may also be varied at will, and any form or desi gn thereof be substituted for those shown.
Having thus described the inventlon, what is claimed as new is 1. In a toy wagon, the combination of a platform havingaxlesin connection therewith and road or ground wheels thereon, eccentrics and friction-wheelson the rear axle,vertical shafts operated by said eccentrics and having tubular shafts thereon supporting figures 1n couples, and frictional wheels on said tubular -shafts engaged by the aforesaid frictional wheels, substantially as described.
2. In a toy wagon, the combination of a platform having axles in connection therewith and road or ground wheels on said axle, a central solid shaft having horizontally-disposed frictional wheels thereon, tubular shafts mounted on said solid shaft and also carrying a similarly disposed frictional Wheel, frictional wheels mounted on said axle, one of which has a double engaging-rim, said Wheels being adapted to bear against the aforesaid horizontally-disposed frictional wheels, and arms mounted on the said tubular shafts and adapt- IOO ed to be rotated in reverse directions, said to the front portion of said tubular part of the shaft and also projecting upwardly through and above the said platform and supporting a figure on the upper end thereof, an arm secured to the front portion of the solid part of the said shaft and also extending upward through and above the platform and supporting a figure on the upper end thereof similarly to the figure of the last-named arm and in reverse position thereto, a stop for one of said arms, and a yielding device connected to each of the said front arms, substantially as described.
4. In a toy wagon, the combination of a platform having axles in connection therewith with road or ground wheels thereon, a rockshaft mounted between said axles lbelow the said platform, arms at the front part of said rock-shaft, extending above the platform and supporting reversely arranged figures, another arm at the rear part of said shaft, projecting above the' platform, a drum in the plane of oscillation of said latter arm, and Wheels on the rear axle, adapted to operate said rock-shaft and the several arms carried thereby, substantially as described.
5. 1n a toy Wagon, the combination of a platform having axles in connection therewith and road or ground Wheels on said axle, figures arranged in pairs at the rear part of said platform and having a rising and a rotary movement, arms revolving in reverse directions and supporting gures adjacent to said pairs or ALBERT G.
