NITE- STATES ATENT BELL TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,628, dated October 26, 1880.
Application filed March 2, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern I Be it known that we, LOUIS KYSER and ALFRED (IBEX, both of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Mechanical Toys, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to that class of mechanical toys which are dragged or propelled over the-ground, and which, during such move ment, impart motion to a figure which plays upon a musical instrument; and it consists in certain mechanical constructions and operations, which are fully and clearly set forth in the following specification and referred to in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of our improved mechanical toy. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showing the operating parts.
A and A are two wheels, and are secured to the axle B, which works in bearings attached to the carriage F. Upon axle B are secured cams G 0, set directly opposite to each other. \Vorking against these cams arelevers D D, secured to hollow sleeves (I d, which work upon a shaft, E, which acts as the fulcrum of the levers. The shaft E is secured to the seat of the carriage F; Secured to the carriageis the figure of a monkey, G, provided on either side, below the shoulders, with a slot, H, through which pins K K move. Pivoted to the body of the figure G by pins J J are arms I l, which are provided with projecting pins K K. The ends of the levers D D above the fulcrum E rest against the pins K K; The hands of the figure hold metallic balls L L. The front end of the carriage is supported and rolls upon the wheel 1. Situated in the front of and secured to the carriage is a box, N. Extending through a hole in the top of this box, and screwed into a cross-piece, n, is a vertical rod, 0. Over the top of this rod is slipped a loose sleeve, 1?, upon which the bell M rests, and is secured upon it by a nut, R, which is screwed down upon the rod 0, the upper end of which extends through a hole in the bell. The front end of the box N is furnished with a loop, S,
to which a cord may be attached wherewith to pull the toy alongthe ground and makeit work.
The operation is as follows The cams G O rotate, alternately rocking the levers D D, which, in turn, press upon the pins K K, which pass through and move in slots H, raising first one arm and then the other, and allowing them to fall by gravity, striking the bell M with the balls L L.
Having now described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a mechanical toy which, being propelled along the ground, causes a figure to raise its arms alternately and strike a bell, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a mechanical toy, the combination of the body F, the wheels A A T, axle B, cams O O, levers D D, shaft E,figure Gr, having arms 1 I, provided with pins K K and balls L L, and bell M, attached to the body, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a mechanical toy, the combination of wheels A A T, axle B, cams G O,levers.D D, supported upon a shaft, E, provided with bearings, and pivoted arms I I, provided with pins K K, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
at. In a mechanical toy, the combination of carriage F, wheels A, A, and T, figure Gr, alternately-striking arms I I, and bell M, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. A figure for a mechanical toy, composed of the body or trunk G, and provided with slots H, through which pins K K, attached to the arms, move, and pivoted arms I I, provided with pins K K, working through slots H, in combination with levers D D, attached to shaft E, and adapted to be operated by cams O O, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
