Description
WILLIAM W. BARNES,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR T() O. M.l ORANDALL 85 OO., OF MONTROSE, PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,974, dated July 29, 1879,' application filed May 19, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. BARNES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toys; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying dran ings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification.
This invention is in the nature of an improvement in toys 5 and the invention consists in a simulated horse, to be operated by a cam fixed to the axle of one of the supporting- Wlieels, in combination with a jointed figure, connected to the horse. by spring-reins, anda saddle-platform, substantially as hereinafter more particularly described.
ln the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure l represents a side view of my toy, partly in section; and Fig. 2, a cross-section through line a' x, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in both figures.
A represents the ligure of a horse, the hind legs of Which are continued into a support, a, passing through the upper surface, b, of an inclosing-box, B. This support is secured atits lower end to a lever, U, which is pivoted at one end, and which rests on a cam, c, at its unpivoted end. The cam c is afxed to the axle b of the wheels d.
To the back of the horse is removably fixed a platform-saddle, D; and secured to the horse A by spring-wires e, which pass from the bit f of the horse to the hands, is a jointed gure, E, the feet of this figure resting on the saddle-platform.
Now, as the inclosing-box B, Within which the supportin g-Wheels revolve, is drawn across the floor, the action of the cam c against the lever O throws up the hind legs of the horse A, and causes the ligure E to bounce upward from the saddle-platform, and to be returned to it as the horse by gravity descends, after the cam c has passed from contact with the lever C, and so on, as the horse rises and falls, the figure E is caused to have a dancing and swinging motion imparted to it, this motion being due, in a great measure, to the springreins e, which assist in throwing the figure into many comical positions, the joints of the arms and legs ofthe figure permitting this.
The figures are each made in removable sections, so that each gure may be readily taken apart and packed away Within the box D, thereby greatly facilitating their transportation.
1n a pending application of mine filed simultaneously herewith, jointed figures to be operated by cam and Wheels are described, shown, and claimed, and I do not therefore claim the same herein; but,
Having now described myinvention, what I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A toy constructed with a rearing horse and jointed rider, in combination with springreins, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a toy, a horse, A, with a platform-saddle removably xed to its back, in combination with spring-reins e, jointed and removably-fixed figure E, and an axle, b, cam c, and lever C, substantially as and for the purpose described.
WILLIAM W. BARNES.
