GUSTAVUS A. MANG, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
CONVERTIBLE TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1916.
Application filed August 25, 1915. Serial No. 47,365.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnsravos A. Mane, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city of Buflalo, county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Convertible Toys, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The general object of my invention has been to provide a toy which is capable of many uses.
Another object has been to provide a toy which shall be inexpensive to manufacture and very durable, and also one which may be used on wheels or rockers.
Furthermore, in producing my toy I have provided a hobby-horse which may be saddled and bridled and otherwise equipped in imitation of a real horse. 6
My toy also provides bins or compartments for the storage of other toys and playthings.
I have sought to provide a toy which the child may take apart and assemble again without fear of loss of parts; By this construction, the childmay exert its ingenuity, and at the same time not tire of the toy, as is the case where it is used constantly in the same manner.
I have accomplished the above objects and advantages by the device shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application. p
In the drawings, like characters of refer: ence indicate like parts throughout the several views, of which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my toy fully equipped and mounted upon rockers. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same with the rockers, saddle and bridle removed. Fig. 3 is a sectional, side elevation of my toy and is taken on line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my toy with the rockers in place, but without the saddle and bridle and with the sides of the horse raised Fig. 5 is a longitudinal, sectional view of the toy, and is taken on line 55 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary, sectional elevation of the same, and is taken on line 66 of Fig. 5.
-My toy comprises a number of separate parts, which, in general, form a hobby-horse 10 and rockers 11. The body 13 of the horse 10 is of square-shaped cross-section, and is open at each side. It is formed with a top 14, a bottom 15, and a front and a rear end 16 and 17, respectively. The front and rear legs 18 and 19, respectively, are made of fiat material, and are secured at their up per ends to the body 13 of the horse. The hoofs 20 of the front legs are secured to a cross piece 21, and the hoofs 22 of the rear legs 19 of the horse are secured to a cross p ece 23. Carriedbv each of the cross pieces 21 and 23 are rollers 24, which are secured to the under side of the cross pieces at some distance from their ends.
The head and neck 25 of my horse is se-' cured to the front end 16 and to the front end of the top 14 of the body. The tail 26 is similarly secured to the rear end 17 of the body 13. Inside of the body 13 of the horse are a number of boxes 27 and 28, which provide bins or compartments for the storage or other toys, or playthings. 29 are the pivoted sides of the horse, which are each hinged at their upper edges to the top 14 of the body of the horse so that they mav be dropped to the side, as shownin Fig. 2, or raised so as to form a table, as shown in Figs. 4 to 6. To the under side of the top 14 and near each edge is provided a turn button 30, which when moved to the position "shown in Fig. 5 will support the pivoted sides 29 of the horse.
As shown in Fig.1, my horse is provided with a bridle 31' and reins 32, which may be put on and taken ofl of the horse at will. A saddle 33 is also provided, which is strapped in position on the horse by means of the strap 34. 35 are the stirrups and are secured to the saddle in the usual manner. 36 and 37 are saddle bags, which are also made detachable. 39 is a blanket.
The rocker member 11 of my device is provided with two rockers 40 and 41, as usual. At the center of each of these rockers is an upwardly extending portion 42, and extending across between these portions are two pieces of material 43, arranged preferably in a V-shaped manner and forming a box or receptacle in the rocker member. Two hinged covers 44 are provided on top of this box or receptacle so that the same may be closed. The rockers 40 and 41 are each provided at each side of the upwardly extending portion 42 with notches 45. In these notches the outer ends of the cross pieces 21 and 23 are arranged to set. Bolts 46 pass through the rockers and the cross pieces, and are provided at their upper ends with thumb nuts l7 by which the hobby horse may be quickly and easily attached to or detached from the rocker member.
It will thus be seen that my device may be used as a rocking-horse, or it may be firmly placed upon its rollers. It further provides a table, and by its detachable parts it also provides a horse which may be saddled and bridled or unharnessed at the will of the child in imitation of a real horse.
Obviously, some modifications of the details herein shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the appended claims, and I do not wish to be limited to the exact embodiment herein shown and described.
Having thus describedmy invention, what I claim is:
1. A toy comprising a hollow animal body of square-shaped cross-section, said body forming a storage compartment, and having one of its sides pivoted thereto, and means for keeping said pivoted side in a substantially horizontal position, whereby a shelf is provided.
2. A toy comprising a hollow animal body, saidbody forming a storage compartment, cross pieces extending across the feet of said body, a rocking member, and means for detachably uniting said body and said rocking member.
3. A toy comprising a hollow animal body, means for making the interior of said body accessible for storing articles therein, cross pieces extending across the feet of said body, a rocking member, and means for detachably uniting said body and said rocking member. I
4. A toy comprising a hollow animal body, said body forming a storage compartmerit, pivoted sideshinged to said body and arranged to close said compartment, and
means for keeping said sides elevated, whereby a table is formed.
5. A toy comprising a hollow animal body, said body forming a storage compartment, cross pieces extending laterally across the feet of said body, a rocking member, means for detachably uniting said body and said rocking member, said rocking member having central, upwardly extending portions, a box formed between said portions and hinged covers for said box.
6. A hobby-horse having a body of square-shaped cross-section, and pivoted sides hinged to said body and arranged to close the sides of the horse.
7. A hobby-horse having a body of square-shaped cross-section, pivoted sides hinged to said body and arranged to close the sides of the horse, and means for keeping said sides elevated, whereby a table is formed.
8. A toy comprising a hobby-horse member having cross pieces extending laterally under its hoofs, a rocking member, means for detachably uniting said members, said rocking member having central upwardly extending portions, a box formed between said portions, and hinged covers for said box.
9. A toy comprising a hollow animal body of square-shaped cross-section, said body forming a storage compartment, pivoted sides hinged to said body and arranged to close saidcompartment, and means for keeping said sides elevated, whereby a table is formed.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GUSTAVUS A. MANG.
