Description

(No Model.)
J. W. MILLER 8v J. M; SHAFPNER.
LANTERN.
Patented Nov. 16, 1897.
UNITED STATES JOSEPH WARREN MILLER AND JOHN. MARTIN SHAFFNER, OF HARRISBURG,
PATENT OFFICE.
PENNSYLVANIA.
LANTEARN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,725, dated November 16, 1897.
Application filed February 1'7, 1896.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH WARREN MIL- LER and JOHN MARTIN SHAFFNER, citizens of the United States, residing at Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lanterns; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming partof this specification. Y
In the drawings which form a part of our specification, Figure 1' is. a perspective view of the lantern, showing the lantern ready for. use. Fig. 2 is a view showing the chimney released. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the lantern constructed of one piece of wire attached to the base.
Similar letters and numerals refer to similar parts.
In Fig. 1, 1 is an outwardly-impinging spring-handle hinged to the supporting- wires 2 and 3 at a a, which are crossed at b and preferably loosely connected by the coil 6 in wire .2 around wire 3 at I). Said wires 2 and 3 are bent to firmly clamp the chimney 5 at e e and are fastened or hinged to the base 4, which is adapted to support a candle or lamp and chimney.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of our improvement in lanterns, showing the operation of the same. To release the chimney, the springhandle 1 is pressed, as illustrated,'so that the Serial No. 579,578. (No model.)
g points a a approach each other, which give the wires 2 and 3 an opposite motion and release the clamps at e e. The dotted lines indicate the positions of the frame- wires 2 and 3 when the chimney is clamped.
Fig. 3 is a perspective View showing the lantern as constructedwith one piece of wire with its .two ends attached to the base 4 and is made by bending the wireinto the shape as shown in the drawings and fastening the ends to the base 4. The principles involved in Figs. 1 and 3 are precisely the same.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the base of a lantern of the wires 2 and 3, connected thereto and having portions bent slanting at the top of and engaging with the chimney to hold it in place, the said wires crossing above the chimney and the spring-handle 1 as set forth and described.
2. The bent-wire spring-handle 1 in combination with the wires 2 and 3, having portions bent slanting at the top of and engaging with the chimney, crossing above the chimney one of said'wires engaging with a coil in the other wire the said wires being connected to said handlel and base 4 as substantially set forth and described.
