To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES JACOB PERKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenville, in the county of Pitt and State of North Carolina, haveinvented a new and useful Lamp-Chimney, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates generally to lampchimneys, and particularly to that class constructed of a plurality of sections held detachably assembled.

The object of the inventionis in a ready, simple, thoroughly efficient, and practical manner to effect assemblage of the chimneysections in such manner as to obviate liability of breakage due to unequal expansion and contraction, as from sudden exposure to heat or cold, to facilitate cleansing, and to effect large saving in package and transportation.

With these and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better; understood, the same consists, generally stated, in a multipart lamp-chimney of the obese-bulb type, having a non-elastic assembling device loosely mounted on its upper portion, said device being delicately responsive to and yielding vertically with the expansions and contractions of the chimney.

The invention consists, further, in a longitudinally-divided multipart lamp-chimney of the 0bese-bulb type having the meeting edges of its sections provided with projections adapted to interlock, and a vertically-yieldable non elastic assembling ring loosely mounted upon the upper portion of the bulb.

Theinvention consists, further, in the novel construction and combination of parts of a.

multipart lampchimney, aswill be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts, there is illustrated one form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the elements therein exhibited may be varied or changed as to shape, proportion, and exact manner of assemblage without departing from the spirit thereof, and in this drawing the figure is a view in perspective of a lamp-chimney GOllSlJl'lfCLGd in accordance with the present invention.

Referring to thedrawing, 1 designates alongitudinally-divided mnltipart chimney, consisting in this instance of two sections 2 and 3, the opposed edges of which are corrugated or serrated at 4 to interlock, and thus to hold the chimney-sect ions against having any sliding movement with relation to each other when once assembled. The term multipart is intended to define a structure composed of two or more sections, and while but two sections are herein illustrated it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to this number.

The chimney-sections are held associated at their base in this instance by the clamping-springs 5 of a lamp-burner ring; but, if preferred, a supplemental clamping device may be employed at that point to hold the sections assembled. The upper portion of the sections are held assembled by a ring 6, whichis non-elastic in character and is of sufficient weight to perform the function designed. 'The ring is smooth and is adapted freely to move upon the chimney, and as the sections thereof expand and contract the ring is raised and lowered, thereby in a positive manner obviating any tendency to fracture, which would result if the ring presented re sistance to vertical yield. The ring rests upon the upper portion of the bulb, and its inner walls are therefore impinged by inclined or wedged surfaces, thereby rendering the ring delicately responsive to the expansions and contractions of the chimney, thus to insure its vertical yield as the chimney-sections expand and contract. Heretofore in lampchimneys of this character it has been common to employ a spring-clamp either in the form of a band or of a coiled spring for holding the chimney-sections assembled; but it has been found in practice that such assembling means frequently cause breakage of the chimney, for the reason that they present such resistance to yielding under expansion of the chimney as to cause its-fracture. By the provision of a smoothplain ring,such as employed With the device of the present in vention, the above-named" serious defect is obviated Without added cost to the production of the structure.

When the chimney is to be cleansed, it is only necessary to remove the ring and separate the sections for that purpose. In transportation the sections may be nested, thus not only lessening the liability to breakage, but also efiecting a large saving in space, and thus a reduction in express or freight charges.

While it is preferred to have the meeting edges of the sections corrugated or serrated, as shown, they may be plain and still be Within the scope of the invention. It is further to be understood that although the chimney is shown as longitudinally divided on lines extending parallel with the long diameter of the chimney it may be divided on angularly or spirally disposed lines and still be within the scope of the invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p 1. The combination with a multipart lamp chimney of the obese-bulb type, of a nonelastic assembling device loosely mounted on its upper portion, and being delicately responsive to, and yielding vertically With the expansions and contractions of the chimney.

2. The combination with a multipart lampchimney of the obese-bulb type, of'an assembling device comprising a non-elastic ring loosely mounted on its upper portion,and being raised and lowered by the expansions and contractions of the chimney, thereby obviating any binding with attending danger of fracture.

3. The combination with a longitudinallydivided multipartlamp-chimney of the obesebulb type, having the meeting edges of its sections provided with projections adapted to interlock, of a vertically-yieldable nonelastic assembling-ring loosely mou nted u pou the upper portion of the bulb.
