In the modification illustrated in Figs. 5, 6, and 7 in lieu of the wings 18 ada ted to be folded around the ring 14, the c ip is pro vided with a pair of wings 19 which are apertured to receive the ring 14. By making this aperture of suitable size to provide a close lit with the ring, the clip is securely anchored in place by means of the wings 16, .17.

I claim as my invention 1. In a lantern in combination a guard frame formed of rods andhaving a bottom ring forming the base of the lantern, and a clip attached to the ring and having a downwardly. projecting spur.

2. In a lantern in combination, a guard frame formed of rods having downwardly rojecting members and a base ring at the ower ends thereof, clips folded around the downwardly rojecting members and the base ring and each having a downwardly projecting spur.

3. In a lantern, in combination, a guard frame formed of rods and having a bottom ring forming the base of the lantern, and a spurred clip attached to the bottom ring and having wings folded around an upright of the frame.

4. In a lantern, in combination, a guard frame formed of rods and having a bottom ring forming the base of the lantern, and a spurred cli having wings folded substantially parallel with each other and apertured to fit upon the bottom ring, the upper ends of such wings being folded around one of the rods of the frame.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. HAMM, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Hubbard Woods, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

The invention relates to lanterns especially adapted for use in railway service and particularly by trainmen under circumstances which may require the lantern to be placed upon a slippery car roof, and its object is to provide a lantern of the type shown and described with suitable spurs for engaging slippery surfaces.

The invention is hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:-

Figure 1 is an elevation of the lantern; Figs. 2 to 7 are details showing various forms of spurs used on the lantern.

The lantern to which the invention is applicable, comprises a font support or base ring 10, a dome 11 and a guard frame or basket 12 made of bars which may be either round or flat in cross-section, and which serve not only to protect the globe of the lantern, but to unite the base ring and dome and being extended downwardly below the base ring, as shown at 13, carry a ring 14 which constitutes the bottom of the lantern.

Spurs 15 are secured to the lantern bottom and project downwardly. These spurs are in the form of clips made of sheet metal and blanked out to form wings 16, 17 which are folded around the upright members of the guard frame and wings 18 which are folded around the bottom ring 14. These several wings being set up closely against the members about which they are folded, secure the spur firmly in place.
