Description

No. 609.822. J. B. LONG. Patented Aug. 30, I898. COMBINED BRACKET AND STAND FDR LAMPS.
i (Application filed (No Model.)
H ll
UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE,
JOSEPH B. LONG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED BRACKET AND STAND FOR LAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,822, dated August 30, 1898.
Application filed March 8, 1897- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH B. Lone, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bracket and Stand for Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which may be used either as a bracket for supporting a lamp against a wall or a similar object or as a stand for supporting a lamp on a table and which when used for the latter purpose will hold the fount of the lamp out of contact with the table.
The invention relates exclusively to that class of devices that are made entirely of wire bent to shape, and it does not include any device of which the several features of the device in which the invention consists are not all formed of a single piece of wire.
The invention consists in a combined bracket and stand for lamps having a fountring with a bend or loop which proceeds downward and serves the triple purpose of increasing the elasticity of the ring, providing one of a number of legs which are adapted to rest upon the table when the device is used as a stand and accommodating the handle of the lamp,
and having also legs additional to that resulting from the loop, and a hanger, the latter being preferably provided with means for supporting a reflector, all of which features are made of a single piece of wire bent to shape.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, I will describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of acombined bracket and stand for lamps embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof with a lamp in place, showing the manner of using the device as a stand.
In its preferred form the entire device is constructed of a single piece of stout springwire, which is appropriately bent in order to form the featureshereinafter described.
A represent an open spring-ring, which is adapted to embrace the fount B of the lamp,-
Serial No. 626,382. (No model.)
the latter being provided with an external bead or enlargement b,.which contacts with the fount-rin g and limits the downward movement of the fount through it. This ring is interrupted at o; for the purpose of accommodating the handle I) of the fount, where the fount is provided with a handle; and in order to accomplish this interruption I prefer to bend the wire so as to form a U-shaped loop 0, which proceeds downward from the horizontal plane of the fount-rim g a sufficient distance to pass below the bottom of the fount and fulfils the triple purpose already described. At a point preferably diametrically opposite the loop 0 the two branches of the wire of which the device is made proceed rearward from the fount-ring parallel with each other, as shown at D, and from the extremities of these parallel portions the two branches proceed downward, diverging from each other, for the same distance below the fount-ring as does the loop 0, as shown at E, whence they proceed upward, first diverging and then converging, as shown at F, until they meet. The portions E and F all lie in the same plane and form a broad hanger, which is adapted to rest flat against a wall for the purpose of supporting the lamp, and a pair of legs which, in conjunction with the leg C, are adapted to support the lamp upon a table, the parallel portions D constituting an arm, by which the fount-ring is connected with the hanger. IVhere the two branches of the wire meet they are twisted together, as shown at f, for the purpose of securely uniting them, and above this twisted portion they are bent twice at right angles, first outward and then upward, forming a tongue G, which is ofiset from the hanger F for the purpose of entering the socket H on the rear side of the refiector I.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A combined bracket and stand for a lamp formed of a single piece of wire bent to provide a ring adapted to embrace the fount, a loop proceeding downward from the fountring for the triple purpose of forming a leg, accommodating the handle of the lamp and increasing the elasticity of the ring, a hanger IOO r0 increasing the elasticity of the ring, an arm having two branches proceeding rearward from the fount-ring, a pair of legs proceeding downward from the rear ends of the two branches of said arm, a hanger proceeding upward from said legs, and an offset tongue above the hanger for supporting the reflector, substantially as set forth.
JOSEPH B. LONG.
