Description

(No Model.)
GHANDELIER.
N0.-248,1Y14. Patented 001. 11,1881.
In van?? 72 UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
HENRY E. SHAFFER, on ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
CHANDELIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,114, dated October 11, 1881.
' Application filed January 19,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, HENRY E.SHAFFEa,of Rochester, Monroe county, New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Chandeliers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figurelis an elevation ofaehandeliershowing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the hanger and a plan of the lamp-fixture. Fig.3 is an elevation of one of theheads to which the lamps are attached. Fig. 4 is 'a section showing the end of one of the arms and the lamp-base fitted thereto. Fig. 5 shows one of the lamps removed from place and in position for use as a common stand-lamp.
The object of myinventionis to so construct a chandelier that combined stand and bracket lamps, such as are described and shown in Patent No. 227,731, may be attached thereto, thereby forming a complete chandelier, and may be detached therefrom, thereby enabling said lamps to be used as stand or bracket lamps at pleasure.
The chandelier-fixture consists of an ordinary hanger, A, to which at the bottom are attached the arms B B,thatsupport the lamps O O.
The fixtures shown in thedrawings are trumpet-shaped arms, radiating from a hub placed.
upon the hanger; but any other desired form may be used adapted to the purpose.
()u the outer ends of the arms are disks or heads a a, of a diameter as large as or a little larger than that of the bases of the lamps.
0n the faces of the disks, near the top, are screws, studs, or books I; b, upon which the lamps are hung, and at the bottom are circular flanges or equivalent lugs c 0, within which the bases of the lamps fit to prevent the lamps from tilting or swinging.
The lamps are jointed in the-standard, and have locking devices or springs, by which they may be turned into the right-angled position shown in Fig. l or into the vertical posidependently, either as bracket or stand lamps.
1f desired, other forms of bracket-lamps'may be used instead of the lamps above described.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Paten is- 1. In a chandelier, the arms or equivalent fixtures B B, having at their outer ends heads or bearings of suificient size to receive the bases of lamps, said heads having, screws, studs, or hooks projecting therefrom for attaching the lamps, as herein shown and described.
2. A chandelier consisting of the hanger A, arms or equivalent fixtures B B, provided with disks or heads aa,and thelampsO 0 attached tosaid disks or heads, .as herein shown and described.
In witness \vhereot'l have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
