APPARATUS FOR BOILING 0R HEATING LIQUIDS OR OTHER SUBSTANCES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,470, dated June 7, 1887.
Application filed February 3, 1857. Serial No. 226,454. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that 1, JOHN FEGGETTE BLAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Sulfolk and State of Mas sachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Boiling or Heating Liquids or other Substances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus for boiling or heating liquids or other substances, as set forth in the following specification and claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a side elevation, partly in section, of an apparatus containing my invention.
In the drawing, the letter A indicates a heating device, such as a stove or lamp. B is a holder or receptacle-such, for example, as a pot or kettle. In the example shown in the drawing the receptacle B is made to contain water and a gluepot, I. The holder or receptacle B is connected to or suspended from an oscillating support, such as a beam, D, oscillating about the pivot or support E.
The oscillating support D is provided with a counterpoise, F N. The counterpoise F N tends to oppose the action of the holder B on the oscillating support D.
When any object or substance is to be boiled orheated,such substance is placed on the holder B, and the holder B is brought near to the heating device A, as indicated in full lines in the drawing. The counterpoise F N is placed in such position on the oscillating support D that the holder B, with its contents, when cold, rests near the heating device A. As the substaucein the holderBbecomes heated or evaporated the action of the holder B on the oscillating support is no longer powerful enough to overcome the action of the counterpoise F N. The oscillating device D thus is moved to the position indicated by the dotted lines 2, carrying the holder B away from the heating device A. The holder B and its contents are thus not apt to burn or catch fire.
A set-screw, f, enables the counterpoise F N to be fixed at various points along the 0scillating support D. By having the counterpoise consist of a primary weight, N, and a secondary weight, F, connected by a hinge or pivot, G, the secondary weight F can be swung to the position shown in full lines in the drawing, where the secondary weight F rests upon the primary weight N. When the oscillating support-D arrives at the position shown by the dotted lines 2, the secondary weight F will swing about the pivot G to the position indicated by the dotted lines 3, so as to increase the action of the counterpoise F N on the oscillating support D. The oscillating support is thus carried to the position indicated by the dotted lines 3, whereby the holder B is removed to a safe distance from the heating device A.
The pivot or support E can be carried by suitable means. For example, the bearing or housing'O of the pivot or support E can be carried or supported by an arm or red, I. A screw, L, can connect the bearing-O to the rod or support I. The rod I may be fixed in a foot or socket, H, and steadied by a screw, J.
The bearing or housing 0, instead of resting on a rod, I, may be suspended by a hook or eye, K, to a suitable support, M.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a heating device, of a holder or receptacle, B, an oscillating sup port, D, for said holder or receptacle, and a counterpoise for said receptacle attached to the oscillating support D, said countcrpoise consisting of a primary weight, N, and a secondary weight, F, pivotally connected to the pri mary weight, substantially as set forth.
