HOLDER FOR OHBGKS, NOTES, &c.
No. 345,933. Patented July 20, 1886.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. SPIEGEL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOLDER FOR CHECKS, NOTES, aw.
QPECEFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 345,933, dated July 20, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. SPIEGEL, a citizen of the United States, residingin the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pen 11- sylvania, have invented a new and useful linprovement in Holders for Checks, Notes, Papers, &c., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents a front view ofa holder for checks, &c., embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a partial side elevation and vertical section thereof.
- Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention relates to improvements in the cl ass of holders for checks, &c. for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 301,295 were granted to me on July 1, 1884:. In said patent is shown a swinging arm, which is adapted to be pressed against the papers, &c., placed on the base of the holder, and when not required for use to be thrown in an upright position. This, however, lengthens the standard or up right plate to which the arm is pivoted or hinged, so that it is inconvenient to pass the papers, 850., over the same. Thisis remedied by the construction now presented, whereby the arm may be thrown laterally or to the side.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a standard or upright rod which is secured to the base B. On the upper part ofthe rod is mount-ed a sleeve, 0, to which is hinged or pivoted the arm 1), against which presses the spring E, the latter being connected with said sleeve 0. It will be seen that the arm D is rotatingly supported. 011 the rod A, whereby it may be turned or swung to either side of the holder, the two positions of the arm being represented in Fig. 2, by which provision said arm may be placed out of the path of the hand when it is required to remove cheeks, papers, &c., from one part of the base to the other. hen
the arm 1) is raised, the papers, &c., may be placed under the lower end thereof and securely retained on the base by the pressure of the spring on said arm. Vhen access is re quired to the papers for any purpose, the arm D is raised sufficiently to release the same, and the arm may be thrown to the right or left, so that the papers, &c., may be removed from the front to the rear of the holder, or vice versa, by lifting them over the standards or rods or divisions of the holder without necessarily raising the same over an elevated arm, as shown in my former Letters Patent.
XVhen the papers, &c., are locatedin their new position, the proper arm is restored or thrown over the same, thus again subjecting said papers, &c., to the pressure of the arm D. The sleeve is prevented from dropping, owing to the shoulder or stop of the rod A, the lower end of the sleeve resting on said shoulder, and thetop ofthe rod is provided with aball or other enlargement, or a pin or other device acting as a stop, whereby the sleeve is prevented from being displaced from the rod.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A holder for papers, &c., consisting of a pivoted or hinged arm, astandard or support, and a rotatable sleeve, said sleeve being rotatingly mounted on the support and having the arm connected with it, substantially as described.
2. A holder for papers, &c., having a spring pressed arm hinged or pivoted to a rotatable support, whereby it may be raised and lowered and moved laterally, substantially as de scribed.
3. A holder for papers, (be, composed of the base B,'the standard A, having the rotatable sleeve (3 thereon, the arm D,pivotally secured to said sleeve, and the spring E, bearing against said arm D, all the said parts arranged and combined substantially as described.
