JOSEPH L. MAGKEY, or FOWLER, ILLINOIS.
I FOLDING TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 1111 24, 1919.
Application filed September 3, 1918. 1 Serial N 0. 252,364.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrri L. MACKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fowler, in the county of Adams,State of Illinois, have invented .a new and useful Folding Table; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved foldable table, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple, efficient and practical device of this kind, which may be manufactured for a small cost and sold at a reasonable profit.
A further object of the invention is the provision of improved means for pivotally uniting the table top on the table pedestal, said means having limiting means to limit the table top in its horizontal position.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved adjustable pedestal.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for holding the table top in dilferent adjusted positions and closed. I
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the improved table constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the pivotal connection means between the pedestal and the table top.
Fig. 1 is a view in front elevation of the pivotal connection means.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates the pedestal as a whole, which comprises a tubular section 2 and a base section 3. Said base section comprises a tubular body 4, into which the tubular section 2 telescopes, and is secured by the set screw 5. Suitable legs 6 depend from the tubular body, to support the pedestal on the flooring. The upper end of the tubular section 2 is split, and the split parts 7 are bent laterally and have their outer ends terminating in upturned ears 8, between which ant elongated block 9 L-shaped in. cross section is secured by the screws 10. Apivot rod or pin 11 is mounted in bearings of the ears 8 and pivoted upon the rod or pin 11 are the ears 12 of a U-shaped plate 13. This U-shaped plate is secured by screws 14: to an elongated block 15, which is L-shaped in cross section. The elongated block 15 is in turn secured by screws 16 to a suitable table top 17, on which any suitable work may be performed and supported. It is obvious from an examination of the drawings that when the table top 17 is in a horizontal positiomthe portion 18 of the Lshaped block 15 contacts with the elongated block 9, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, to limit the table top in said horizontal position. When the table top is closed as shown in dotted lines at 19 it contacts with the upper enlarged end of the body 4: of the pedestal, as shown at 20, thereby folding the table top substantially parallel with the section 2 of the pedestal. A loop 21 projects from the side of the section 2 of the pedestal. A segment rod 22 is pivoted at 23 between the ears of a bracket or holder 24, which is carried in any suitable manner by the under face of the table top. This segment bar 22 passes through the loop 21 and is provided with rack teeth 25, anyone of which may engage the lower horizontal portion 26 of the loop 21, so as to hold the table top in dif ierent adjusted positions. WVhen the table top 17 is closed, one of the teeth 25 nearest the pivot 23 may engage the lower part of the loop 21 to hold the table top closed. A suitable receptacle, box or drawer 27 is pivoted at 28 to the under surface of the table top and may be swung outwardly from under the top, for the reception of articles to be stored therein. The table top 17 has depending from its under surface a pair of axially alined guide eyes 29, in which a rod 30 is guided. A. nut 31 is threaded to one end of the rod to engage one of the guide eyes, to limit the rod radially in its outward movement. The outer end of the rod terminates in a circular ring 32, for the reception of a shaving lather receptacle 33 or similar receptacle. When the receptacle is not in use, the rod may be moved radially inwardly, disposing the receptacle under the table top.
The invention having been set forth What is claimed as new and useful is -In a foldable table, the combination With an extensible pedestal having a tubular section, the upper ends of Which being split cross section secured to the under face of the table top and to Which said U-shaped plate is secured, whereby When the table top is moved to a horizontal position, the adjacent parts of said L-shaped block will contact and limit the table top in its position horizontally, and means for holding the table top 'in difi'erent adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH L. MAGKEY.
