L. B. SHARP.
LEG BAND 0R GUARD.
Patented Oct. 19,1897.
UNITED y STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEOPOLD B. SHARP, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LEG BAND OR GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,889, dated October 19, 1897.
Application ned June 28,1897. sel-inno. 642,740. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom if may concern:
Be it known that I, LEOPOLD B. SHARP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Leg Bands or Guards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Hy invention-relates to a novel construction in a detachable leg band or guard for trousers, the object being to provide a device of this kind by means of which an ordinary pair of trousers can be transformed to' look like and perform the oiice of bicycle-trousers; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figurev l is a view in elevation of the lower limbs of a man, illustrating the manner of securing a detachable leg band or guard constructed in accordance with my invention and the manner of folding the trousers over the same to give them the appea-rance of bicycle-trousers. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the inner face of the leg band or guard. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the saine on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to said drawings, A indicates the leg band or guard which consists of two flaps a, of an inelastic material, partially lined on their inner faces, which are connected together by a wedge-shaped piece B of elastic material. One of said iaps a is provided adjacent its outer edge with buttons ce', which are adapted to enter and engage buttonholes a2, situated at corresponding points adjacent the edge of said other iiap a. A clasp C is secured to the inner face of one of said flaps a in any suitable manner, and is adapted to receive and iirmly hold the side.
fold made in the lower end of the trousers to reduce them sufficiently to t the calf of the leg. To secure the said leg band or guard A, the lower ends of the trousers are raised to the desired height and folded so as to reduce them sufficiently to fit the calf. The clasp C is then inserted to engage the fold and clasp the same firmly to the portion itting the calf. This fold' is made on the back of the calf, so that when the clasp has been inserted and the leg band or guard tted to the calf the elastic piece B will be situated on the inner side of the calf and the buttons a on the outer When thus buttoned, said leg band or guard will serve to firmly hold and support the lower ends of the trousers. The portion of the trousers above said leg band or guard is then pulled down so as to partially fold over said leg band or guard, thus giving the said trousers the appearance of and supporting them to serve as bicycle-trousers. B v means of the wedge-shaped piece B, I increase the length of the leg band or guard p along its upper edge to conform with the increased circumference of the calf and also avoid the necessity of a large number ofdif-- ferent sizes, as one size can be stretched to lit various sizes of calves.
I claim as my invention- A detachable leg band or guard comprising two flaps connected together at their inner ends by means of a wedge-shaped piece of elastic material and provided adjacent their outer edges with buttons and buttonholes respectively, and a clasp secured to the inner
