ADELIN E SCHERMERHORN, OF TROY, NEW" YORK.
INVALIDS ROBE."
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,496, dated March 18, 1902.
Application filed July 11, 1901.
.T 0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADELINE SOHERMER- HORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalids Robes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to such improvements; and it consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a front elevation of my improved garment with a portion of the sleeves broken away and one edge of the front flap rolled back for convenience of illustration. Fig. 2 is a back elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the front flap detached. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the back flap detached. Fig. 5 isa front view of the similar sections of the body part, detached, slightly separated from each other with the flaps removed.
The object of my invention is to provide a robe or garment adapted for the use of inva- 'lids in that it can be conveniently applied to or removed from the wearer in detachable parts or sections, which are secured together upon the wearer to present the appearance of and to serve as a complete garment.
The body part of the garment is composed of two similar sections 1 and 2, which are adapted to be secured together along their front edges by means of the buttonholes 3 and buttons 4., and along their back edges by means of .the buttonhole 5 and the button 6. (Shown in Fig. 2.) The lower portions of these sections are also adapted to be further secured to each other by means of the tape or tapes 7 and 8, which are secured at one end to the several sections at the back of the garmentthe tape 7 to the section 2 by the stitching 9 and the tape 8 to the section 1, as by the stitching 10, as seen in Fig. 5. These tapes are both brought to the outer side of the body'of the garment at the back, as by shown in Fig. 1.
passing the tape fastened to one of said sec- Serial No. 67,864. (No medal.)
tions, as tape 7, outwardly through the slit 5 The garmentthe body-section 1 and the other edge with the buttons 15 on the body-section 2. The front flap 16 is provided with similar buttonholes 17, adapted to receive the respective buttons 14 and '15 on the body-sections, and
with a middle buttonhole 18,adapted to be connected with the lowermost front button on the body-section 1 after the same hasbeen inserted in its appropriate buttonhole 3 in the section 2.
The flaps are further secured to the body-sections by means of the tapes 7 and 8, which are passed outwardlythrough the tape openingsor slits 21 in the .back flap, then inwardly through the slits 22 in said back flap, then passed between the body and flaps around to the front of the garment, where they are passed outwardly through the slits 23 in the front flap and have their ends tied together, as The lapping portions of the body-sections and flaps, being at or near the waist-line of the garment, may be drawn in or gathered by means of these shirring-tapes to fit as closely as desired the waist of the wearer, whereby the tapes serve the double purpose of assisting in keeping the lapping portions of the garment together and also to' soiled flap may be substituted for a soiledone and a clean flap attached in place of the partially-soiled flap, thus economizing in the number of flaps necessarily accompanying each garment. I am also able after detaching the flaps to remove the body part ofthe garment from the wearer one section at a time by de- I taching the front and back portions of the two body-sections from each other, thus causing the wearer the least inconvenience possible.
The wearer of the garment may be a person confined to the bed and unable to assume a sitting posture, in which case by rolling the person over on one side the section on the other side can be easily applied or removed or changed by substituting a clean for a soiled section, and in like manner the other section can be applied, removed, or changed by rolling the person over upon the other side.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An invalids robe comprising an adjustable body composed of two similar detachable sections and means for adjustably securing such sections together; detachable front and back flaps; and means for detachably and adjustably securing such flaps to the adjusted body, substantially as described.
2. An invalids robe comprising a body and detachable front and back body-lapping flaps having tape-openings in the lapping parts at or near the waist-line; and shirringtapes passed through such openings for detachably and adjustably securing the flaps to the body and at the same time adjusting the size of the waist, substantially as described.
3. An in valids robe comprising a body and detachable interchangeable front and back flaps, and means for detachably and interchangeably securing the flaps to the body, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of May, 1901.
ADELINE SCHERMERTIORN.
