Description

d Mbdel.) 2 Sheets-Sheet 2. J. B. GRAHAM. FENCE.
Patented Sept. 14, 1897.
WITNESSES JEROME c. GRAHAM, or
ATENT Fries.
SYRACUSE, NE\V YORK.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,943,
dated September 14, 1897.
Application filed September 12, 1896. Serial No. 605,612. No model.)
To all whom it vncty concern;
Be it known that I, JEROME B. GRAHAM, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fences, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in fences, and has for its object the production of a'fence which is particularly simple, is highly ornamental in appearance, and is of such construction that climbing thereof is prevented; and to this endit consists, essentially, in the general construction and arrangement of .the component parts of the fence, all as hereinafter fully'described, and pointed out in the claims.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figures land 2 are respectivelya side elevation and edge View, partly in section, of a portion of a fence constructed in accordance with my invention and Fig. 3 is an edge view, partly in section, of a slightly-modified construction of my improved fence.
The main body of my fence is of any suitable form, size, and construction, and is here illustrated as composed of upright posts A,
longitudinal wires B, suitably attached to the posts, and transverse upright wires 0, secured by suitable fastening means 0 to the wires B.
The main body of my improved fence is provided with a series of loop-shaped or open overhanging crests D, which carry wires 61,- extending lengthwise of said main body. The crests D preferably consist of 1oop-shaped cross-bars extending laterally and upwardly from opposite sides of the posts A and having their oppositeends secured to said posts.
As preferably constructed, the bars formin g the crests D are provided with downturned parallel extremities cl, secured by suitable fastening means at to'opposite faces of the upper ends of the posts A. The portions of said bars immediately adjacent to the downturnedextremities d extend outwardly and upwardly from the posts A and unite with the central portions of said bars, which are preferably formed bow-shaped.
The wires d may be secured by any suitable fastening means 01 which are preferably formed at their upper ends with eyes for receiving said wires and are provided at their lower ends with spring arms 01, passed through perforations (Z 111 the bars forming the crests D. The lower ends of said arms are formed with outturned flexible extremities which engage the inner faces of said bars forming the crests D and firmly secure the Wires d to said crests.
At Fig. 3 I have shown a slightly-modified construction of my invention in which the crests D project from only one side of the posts A and areformed by bars having their opposite extremities. lapped one upon the other and secured to one side of the posts A by fastening means (Z This construction of my invention is particularly applicable for use upon fences which it is not permissible to provide with portions overhanging both faces or sides thereof.
The construction of my invention will now be readily understood upon reference to the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, and it will be apparent that it is particularly applicable for use in inclosing cemeteries, parks, and other places which are designed to be entered only through suitable gates.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, the herein-described wire fence, the same being provided with overhanging substantially upright loop-shaped crests, and a wire supported by said crests substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, the
herein-described wire fence, the same being provided with upwardly extending loopshapcd crests projecting laterally beyond the opposite sides of the underlying portion of the fence and a wire supported by said crests, substantiallyas and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination with the main body of a wire fence; of loop-shaped cross-bars pro j ecting laterally and upwardly from the main body, and having their opposite ends secured to said main body, and a wire supported by the bars and extending lengthwise of said main body, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination with the main body of a wire fence provided with upright posts; of open or hollow upwardly-extending crests secured to the upper ends of the posts and projecting laterally therefrom, and a wire supported by the open crests and extending lengthwise of said main body, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. The combination with the main body of a wire fence provided with upright posts; of open or hollow crests secured to the upper ends of the posts and projecting laterallyand upwardly therefrom, wires arranged at one side of themain body of the fence, and means for removably securin g the wires to said crests, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
-6. The combination with the main body of a wire fence provided with upright posts; of loop-shaped cross-bars extending laterally and upwardly from theposts and having their opposite ends secured thereto, and wires sup ported by the cross-bars and extendin g-lengthwise of said main body, substantially-as and for the purpose set forth.
7. The combination with the main body of a'wire fence provided with upright posts; of crossbars having substantially parallel ends secured to opposite sides of the posts, said cross bars extending outwardly from the posts and being formed with bowshaped central portions, and wires supported by the cross-bars and extending lengthwise-0f said main body, substantially as and for the purpose described.
8. The combination with the main body of a wire fence; of perforated projecting bars secured to the main body, wires extending crosswise of the bars, and fastening members secured to the wires and arranged in the perforations of the bars, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
9. The combination with the main body of awire fence provided with upright posts; of
perforated projecting bars secured to the main body, a wire extending crosswise of the bars, and fastening members passed through the perforations of the bars and having their corresponding ends engaged with the wire and their opposite ends provided with later- 5 ally-extending flexible extremities engaged with said bars, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
10. The combination with the mainbody-of a wire fence provided with upright posts; of
cross-bars having substantiallyparallelends secured to opposite sides of the ,posts, said cross-bars extending outwardlyfrom'theposts and being formed with perforated bow-shaped central portions, wires extending crosswise'of the cross-bars, and fastening members .provided with eyes for receiving the wires, and spring-arms passed through the perforations of the cross-bars and formed with laterallyextending extremities engaged with SttldJO cross-bars, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name, in the presenceof twoattesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of
